Hard drive not formatting

I bought a new western digital black caviar 500GB to go into my dads powermac G5 and just as I was installing the OS we had a power cut (just my luck!). Now, when I look at the disk in disk utility I no longer see the partition but just the disk name. Whenever I try to reformat the disk the computer either crashes or the disk just doesn't reformat. Is there any way I can force the drive to format? I am a bit limited at the moment to using OSX (leopard) so if you guys could give me ideas for Leopard that would be great!

That sounds like the power cut has damaged the drive in some way.
its best to run a diagnostic check using WD's software. do you have another PC you can plug it into?

The data lifeguard should check it thoroughly for you. Doesn't run on OSX through....
