I have just bought a Maxtor 250GB hard drive. I have fitted it into my computer and installed windows XP, the only trouble is, it says that it is only 127GB when the hard drive is meant to be 250 GB. I am baffled. What has happened to the other 150GB?

had a similar problem with mine, if you right click on my computer, then go manage, then go to disk management! you should be able to formatt the othe 150gb of your hard drive! i just created two partitions of my drive! you could use a programme to join both partitions (think partition magic) but this could cause some problems!

You need SP1 or SP2 to get 48 bit LBA support for drives of that size and larger than 137gb. Also if you want the full drive support at install then you need install media with SP1 or 2 slipstreamed in already. You can use nlite to do this.

So how would I go about doing this?

I have formatted the remaining space, however, I do not want 2 partitions. I want one 250GB partition. How would I achieve this? I have now got nlite but when i try to copy the cd files over it says total space is 127GB, how do I get it to recognise both partitions?

First off make sure you have XP SP2 installed.

Then the easiest way to get a single partition is to move everything out of the two you have just now and then in the Disk Management doof delete the two wee ones and create a new 250Gb partition.

When we say use Nlite, we mean to make a windows CD with the Service pack 2 files slipstreamed, read up a bit i think Nlite has guides. When you make this disc you need to reinstall windows from scratch, with sp2 it'll see your 250gb at windows setup instead of 127Gb. You can use partition magic if you don't want to reinstall but personally i prefer to do it the right way.
