Right i have 4 hard drives.

3x 200gbs (2x Maxtors and a Seagate)
and my lovely 500gb 5000AAKS.

Now theres been no problems with the WD or the maxtor I'm using as my system partition.

However the other two drives (a seagate and maxtor) have both on many occasion just dropped out, ie i go into my computer and they are not there. Not in device manager and i have to reboot to get them back.

Now they are tightly packed in my case, but according to hdtune they all run around 30c so temperatures doesnt seem an issue.

Any ideas?

Oh and motherboard is Asus P5k.

I used to have this problem with older PATA drives as the molex connectors on my PSU were loose - I had a very very old enermax PSU which after so much unplugging/replugging cables made them loose. Are you sata drives connected to a molex adapter? If so you might want to check that it has a tight fit. Worth a try.

Running at stock? If you can rule out the motherboard then the drives may be faulty...

Oc'ed admit idly but its only 333mhz fsb which this motherboard is actually rated too. Only thing technical overclocked is the CPU but its orthos stable and all that so I'd hazard a guess and say that bits fine.

As for faulty drive, that's what I'm leaning towards, since the other 2 drives have been fine.

Using sata power connectors, But ill swap them around and make 100% there secure.

Just dived in. Just took the 2x 200gb's out. Don't need the space right now case is bloomin crampt with them in. Just gonna life without for now. But what i've done instead is used their cables for the two remaining drives. So i can rule those out.

I tend to find this is the first indication of a PSU going downhill (if all cable checks etc show nothing).

Unplug one of the other drives not showing any issues and reattach your drive that keeps dropping out. If the system seems to be stable for a period of time but plugging to removed drive back in causes the system to become flakey again then I would think about changing the PSU.

I had to unplug a drive due to my PSU loosing power as my boot drive kept on failing due to lack of power. New PSU resolved the problem and the other drive could be plugged in again.

Also bear in mind that is the drive is being written to when it dissapears you are likely to get corruption (a real PITA when it is your boot drive :().

Well touch wood it hasn't been my boot drive yet.

As for psu causing the problem - I'm skeptical. Its a 700watt FSP. Granted to necesaraly the best but never had any issues and clearly enough to power my system.

Anyway, system has been totally fine with just 2 hard drives. Going to leave it like this and not worry about it for now :)
