Yes, like any cheesy eighties action flick, there has to be a sequel.

This time, its over to Rob:

Retro Status - FAIL.

Low Status - PASS! Thus I think it may be appreciated here;

My E36 318iS Slammed over 16x9" ET15 Borbet A's with 215 40 rubber and 20mm Spacers on the back!

Yes, I'm a sell out, but I do a lot of miles now and as I like my hearing and spine I don't want to use the KP everyday.

The pics suck but you get the idea!

Robs other car (KP30 Toyota 1000) is featured in the July issue of Banzai too if you want to have a look (its the oh-so-sweet little white one ;))

So it will fit in with all the other 318's that can be found on council estates.

I like the idea of dropping a car on wheels with dish. I like the look, but to me no matter what is done with an E36, it will never lose it's chav image. Those particular wheels don't suit the car either.

Likewise with Imprezas? ;)

God is in the details. Do you not think it rather narrow-minded to tar all E36s with the same brush?

Banzai sucks. i bought a copy thinking it would be a good read.

but they dont even drive the cars, they merely interview the owner, take his word and its article over!
Very, very few mags drive 'owners cars' - the only cars which tend to get driven by the hacks are the 'review cars'; the mainstay of Top Gear, Evo et cetera.

The only mag I can think of which regularly drives owners cars is Octane. Most simply get a passenger ride (if that) and go "ZOMGZ!!!!! THEH FASTS!!!!"

why dont they request a drive in the car and then write up how the different bits work together and whether it drives like the shagged out 318 it looks to be or whether its a nice car?

Why would Banzai want to feature a 318is?

Insurance is the main hurdle...plus, if you had a feature-worthy car, would you let some degenerate hack loose in it?

No, because I think they all look crap. I appreciate them for what they are but I perceive them as a car driven by uncouth folk from rough estates. There might be one out there that I like the look of but I highly doubt it.

I'm from a council estate. cheeky wee nyaff :p

My mrs is over in the land of potatoes and bejaysus atm :/ can't remember the name of the place...begins with N, about 30 miles from Dublin.

Looks? Driveability? Practicality?
Surely it is impossible to comment on the latter two of those when presented with nothing but a handful of photos? Non?

I don't mind modifying, when it's tasteful. ;)

Its hardly boasting neonz, 20" rims and half a tonne of fibreglass and filler is it?

Lowered, pulled/rolled/massaged arches and new wheels. Quite tasteful in my view. Certainly sympathetic.

The only thing that I would change visually is to perhaps drop the front by another 1/2"...

You can't beat wheels with a sensible diameter, silly widths and ostentatious dish...especially if they have some nicely stretched rubber on them.

Rear of the BMW is the sux0rz. Wheels aren't supposed to stick out that far... especially not on a 318!!
Wheels should end up either level with the edge of the arch or protruding slightly beyond.

I think next weekend I'm going to take my car to a carpark, whack the wheels off, lower the coilovers down the the minimum just to see how ridiculously low I can get my car.

I just dont get it.

Prefer this to the other one though.

Do it!!!!!!!!!!

Fiat koops are lovely looking little things...wider wheels with a bit of dish and a healthy drop would leave it looking very nice.

Just remember that after you wind the coilovers down, lower it so the wheels are on some blocks of wood so you can get the jack out.

I think it looks amazing, the drop gives it the perfect stance and those wheels suit the lines of the E36 perfectly, and blend nicely with the classic styling of the original orange indicators.

Can we have the old Fox back please?

paint the door handles and debadge the bonnet, then 2 steps closer to a super smooth looking car.

Iwas just going to add its crying out for some comedy novelty sticker, then saw the 86 in the rear screen nice...

/ok one more thing, shie that rear pipe up, maybe even a nod to the oldskool and a twin upswept DTM style item, but don't know if thats to many chav styling cues or not, I reckon this car can do it!

I would leave the body as is and simply drop the front a smidgen more; a gripe I have with many BMWs is the front/rear arch discrepancy; the front arches always appear far too large in profile.

Ack. I forgot about the Koops' bonnet line meaning there isn't much in the way of arch. Gutted :(

They 14" or 15" rims?

Nice. Could someone try potatochopping the TH's on? There is a part of my mind that thinks a flat-sided wheel would work well...

Retro: "Retro is a term used to describe the culture of the past."

Surely "culture of the past" is so subjective? Yesterday is the past, so therefore you could class even a brand new car as "retro" as long as you have this "attitude"?
Bingo.

'Retro' (capital R) encompasses everything from vintage/prewar to virtually new.

It encompasses ideas, themes and aesthetics from a multidtude of secular 'scenes' and pools the best of those together.

It is inclusive. Not exclusive.

What exactly is the "retro attitude" all about? What character traits would somebody with the attitude possess?

It's not about people. It's about cars ;)
