Hi, i purchased a new HDD from OCuk. HDD in question is a western digital caviar SE16 320gb 3200ks SATA-11 16mb cache - oem.
when i boot it up it makes a "clicking noise" and i cant start up. i want it to be a slave HDD to my other HDD which is not SATA.

The jumper settings on my other WD HDD that loads up windows is on cable select. the new HDD does not have as many pins as my old one so i dont know how to set it up as master/slave.

my mobo has all the right connecterors it supports a 939 processor.

When i start up, the HDD just starts connecting and my computer cant seem to detect either HDD. what should i do?

Ideally your primary IDE hard drive should be set as a master.
The PC wouldn't be one made by a certain big name company by any chance?
I'll never understand why companies are so lazy and leave hard drives set as cable select.
SATA hard drives don't have master / slave settings.
It's not relevant to them in the way SATA is designed.

More importantly, from what you have said, your SATA hard drive is faulty.
Get it replaced as it's a DOA.
The 'clicking noise' is a tell tale sign that it's faulty.

how is that possibly i just brought it?!!
i brought it from ocUK will i get a full refund or something?
But if thats not the case all i need to do is set my primary as Master and i leave my SATA with no jumper settings?

OK, the new drive is SATA so it connects differently to your existing IDE drive. The master/slave thing is just how you go about having 2 IDE drives on the same cable. In your case you just want to connect up the SATA drive and let it act as a second drive within Windows, there's no need to set any jumpers on either drive.

Is the clicking a repetitive noise? Certainly sounds like the drive is DOA. If it's not detected by the BIOS then you'll not be able to run any diagnostics against it so it could be a straight RMA back to OCUK.

it goes "tick tick tick {pause} tick tick tick {pause} etc. If it is broken... what are the chances of it just being a faulty HDD? i just find that unreal in this day and age!. could i then change my HDD to a normal HDD rather then sata so i can just set it up as master/slave, something i know how to do :P

no need to do that. Your not doing anything worng, your just unlucky and got a faulty drive. Get it sent back and replaced and you'll be fine.

since WD produce a huge quantity of drives they cant test them all you are unlucky to get one dead- be thankful though it didnt die after you loaded all your stuff on to it.

Anything is possible with electronic products.
I've seen plenty of new HDD's that were DOA including WD Raptors.
