hardocp 3870x2 review up

£300, thats a major problem for ATI!

The twin GTs beat the X2, and so you can safely expect the badly named 8 series in disguise 9800GX2 to be equal or better to the GT's, beating the X2. As long as NV dont push the GX2 out at any more than £330ish it will definatley be the better card... that is if people dont just SLI a pair of GTs or GTS's...

Not looking good for ATI...

love the fanboyism in here :p gonna get one - its still early drivers for it and anandtech said there is another big driver update that will push it further still. a lot of the games tested werent really focused on for the last driver update so quit your whinging. and its under 300 on launch day - beats an ultra and you still whinge.

get a grip.

Looks a good purchase if your playing a lot of 'Source' based games but still missing the grunt in a lot of titles that a nVidia solution offers.

I really wanted this card to be priced competitively at £300 this card is going to fail.

you can get 2 GT's for £306

Whilst this was my belief too, I just had a look at the results posting from anandtech. Looking at the 1920:1200 0AA scores in terms of % fps increase, Bioshock, Crysis, UT3 all scaled better with SLI than crossfire. Half Life, Oblivion and World in Conflict scaled better with crossfire whilst gains for CoD4 and Witcher were comparable. The average % fps increase over all 7 games was 63% going from 1GT to 2GT SLI and 59% going from 3870 to 3870x2

So these results at least do not indicate that crossfire on average is scaleing better than SLI. For some games it is yes, but not all.

Very well put sir.

Looking at the game benches in that review i noticed that the pair of GT's was doing rather well and they were offering a significant increase over a single card.

I think both ATI and Nvidia have improved multi GPU scaling in there recent drivers.

the Ultra is EOL soon, and the X2 is subject to launch day price hikes (the 3870 has dropped by over £40 in a month or so).

Anything more than £280 makes the X2 a looser to CF 3870s (nice core freq on the X2 though, 825 up from 775), and when most enthusiast boards are CF compatible CF is a valid option for a lot of users.

GT SLi is £320+, and there are few decent SLI boards about, whereas the X2 has the benefit of working completely with every board out there, even the budget/midrange ones (i can see people saving a chunk of money and getting a cheap P35 + X2, over 780i and GT SLI).

9xxx isnt out yet, so prices may well fluctuate on its launch, however is its a replacement for the Ultra, be sure to see high £300 price point or higher.

In short, its too early to call how well a card just released will compete with a card that isnt out yet!

Yup

nVidia has recently included "new AFR" which while its still somewhat betaish imo it is doing rather nicely in some titles and getting SLI support into games that previously it wasn't possible to support...

The whole crossfire scales better than SLI is rubbish tbh and has never been proven*... the AT review is the first I've seen in awhile where the review actually seems to have gotten to grips with SLI.

*I'm not saying crossfire is rubbish here or that SLI is superior to crossfire or the other way around...

I'm surprised at how much better the GT's in sli scale compared to the 3870s in Crysis. I thought the general concensus was that crossfire scaled better.

Still it is an Nvidia sponsored game I suppose.

just went through that anandtech review, now i can;t see why people say sli is inferior to crossfire since the 8800gt sli hammers the 3870 x2.
looks like crossfire is nothing special now either. rack up another failure for ati.

Oh god, its amazing the arguments you can put forth when you just want to bash something for the hell of it.

Crossfire is more effecient but not to the extent that its gonna best 2 gt's which beat out the standard 3870 by a sizable margin. Even if it had beat out the gt's by a sizable margin you'd still find something to whine about like always.

true, so many nv fan boys about here lol. dont see why its a graphics card not jesus lol.

and your squaring up an sli vs a single card solution when you should be comparing 2 gt's vs 2 3870's :p not that I care tbh but stewart gilligan griffin demands silence.

seen the hardocps and toms review was expecting more but i supose single cards have allways been better supported! ultra has done me well for 7 months so might as well keep it till the new age of single cards are out !!

its not about fan boys its about the better card ati have had nothing out that has touched the gtx or ultra in over 13 months and to even get anywhere near there single card market they had to use a duel chip sollution which doesn't even look like it avg better than a gtx going from hardocp!!!

i just was hoping a lot more from ati there last amazing card was the 9800pro and they have never toped that in the market today!!

Theres many ways to benchmark a card and all the sites think theyre right in how they do it. Fact is the vast majority of sites that using similar methods to anand show the x2 smacking the gtx around in quite a few benchmarks by upto 50fps.

Secondly, it makes no difference how ati acheive performance scaling, 1 chip 2 chips, i couldn't give a crap if they used 6-8 chips, what matters is the performance in games and to gamers thats all that matters.

and the fact as its been noted here all or most major sites just use the inbulit gpu test or another benchmarking tool and dont' take ingame fps into account ocp does this with min avg and max so thats why its more than likely this is a better account of what the card can do!!!

and for ati to come in a year behind the gtx with a 300 quid card that hardly beats it is laughable tbh 512gts is the way to go till better cards come out!!
