HardOCP Max Payne 3 performance review

Just looking at that review again and i want to know where hardocp's highest settings playable went to. The gtx680 sli might have the higher frame rates but it cant use msaa because it would most likely be vram limited. This seems a little nvidia biased to me. If this was a true comparison of the cards then as usual highest playable should be in there.

Can be maxed out on 2GB cards with Disable desktop composition on the exe.

At 2560x1600 had to drop to 4XMSAA, ran out of Vram.

Others are asking for the MSAA tests as well.

It stands to reason as fxaa is not always liked. I can live with it as i have to with my gpu horse power but those with extra power usually prefer msaa or above to loose the blur.

Well i live with it in BF3 with 4XMSAA and low FXAA as MSAA wont go any higher in that game, with a next gen card i should be able to force more through the driver and do without FXAA in that game but MSAA always comes first for me and i can only ever tolerate the lowest FXAA setting.

usually disappointed pc gamers out their who spend thousands on hardware to play lazy bug ridden console ports.

Exactly those that spend thousands on hardware shouldn't mind spending £30 on a game. The game dev's don't see money from hardware sales .

It's a fact, piracy is far worse on PC than any other medium, saying otherwise just sounds like your justifying piracy for yourself.

Ah well, i'll keep supporting the industry so others can keep freeloading :).

Wow fall for the "company" line much eh?

Piracy is rife on the 360 and handheld consoles, piracy hurting pc games is just the excuse lazy devs throw out to appease the usually disappointed pc gamers out their who spend thousands on hardware to play lazy bug ridden console ports.

wow, im speechless . you do realise games are made by people just like us who have mortgages, wives, husbands, children to feed?

or did you think they were made by robots in some games factory?

to people who pirate if they do work, what would you say if you're boss said to you , you're working for free now because that's basically what you're asking game devs,

if you pirate games then you need grow up and pay up as it's theft! people who pirate dont deserve to play the great games we have at our disposal right now!

but about the game, i have a friend playing it on a 7870 and he reckons he has it maxed out and it's smooth as butter, and one of the best looking pc games he has seen. he was drunk at the time he texted that and a die hard max payne fan lol. So should expect a 680 or 7970 to run this game no problem?

This is how my ATI card handles it, max settings bar the MSAA only being on X4 as my FPS turns to mush at X8:

Specs in the video description :)

What res do you play at? What happens to your 680 if it doesnt have enough vram?

Thinking of getting a GTX 670, but if 2gigs vram isnt enough.....
2GB are not enough when using very high MSAA:

Everything else maxed out:
No MSAA = 965MB
2x MSAA = 1117MB
4x MSAA = 1421MB
8x MSAA = 2030MB

Then again even if you have 3GB vram I don't think any single gpu card is fast enough for 8x MSAA. My 7970 averages 25-30fps when all is maxed out, which while playable is not very enjoyable. With 4x MSAA it drops to 40fps in some scenes and stays around 60.

Also some guy at Hardforum wrote that MSAA is uglier than FXAA in Max Payne 3 and provided screenshots. I tested myself and came with the same results:

8x MSAA + Very High FXAA:

2x MSAA + Very High FXAA:

8x MSAA + No FXAA:

Very High FXAA Only:

I would have to say FXAA only looks the best and for some weird reason MSAA does the opposite of what it should do: you can clearly see the jagged edges on the white sofa and at the wall on the left.

That's with Gigabyte 7970 OC Windforce

Yea from those screen shots the FXAA only looks the best...

Finding the game pretty frustrating, not enjoying it a whole lot.

Main reason is the weird shooting style, its similar to a resident evil game where the character stands off center making shooting confusing.

Cant get fraps to run with the game so dont know how much fps on my lightning at 1150/1550, what benchmarking software is in those screens above?

at very high resolutions like 5760 x 1080, msaa isn't usable on 2gb or 4gb cards, they simply run out of processing power and vram doesn't even enter the equation, the game remains 100% playable at 12100 x 1080 3D, maxed bar ssao not hdao(fixes 3D) and aa off, smaa injector on (works now?)

FRAPS works for me. MSI Afterburner (top left corner) doesn't show the correct fps.

With Gigabyte 7970 OC @ 1000Mhz and with MSAA turned off I get rock solid 60fps with vsync on with everything else maxed out.

Yeah seem to be having issues with my mp3, it comes up with a windows is performing slow and gives options to change aero settings for some reason. Also all things on the desktop on my second screen stop. MSI afterburner is frozen until i tab out of the game or quit.

Just tried with MW3 and fraps and msi show up fine, and seem to be showing same fps.

Hm, I got the same problem with Windows is performing slow. Also the game just crashed on me after about 30 minutes of playing. There was also some CCC.exe window in the taskbar, which I couldn't maximize (it's like it didn't have a window). Maybe the video driver crashed, but as this is my first AMD card I don't know how to tell. With Nvidia it tells you with a tray tooltip that the graphic driver has crashed and then recovered.

Will play more tomorrow and see how it performs.
