Hardocp review mlaa

Its not really a case of stand it or can't... it has its place... if you prefer it to MSAA/can't tell the difference all well and good... but it is not a replacement/improvement over MSAA in the main - which is what some people are trying to make out.

I agree, but it could be as I demonstrated previously, that it simply needs a bit of sharpening which shouldn't be too difficult.

Hello all. I don't usually post but instead just read the forums but thought I'd share my opinion. I have a 6870 and have briefly used the option. Going by the images they have provided though I believe all the images except one look better with MLAA vs No AA but I prefer the MSAA (and the other forms of AA) examples over the MLAA. Maybe its just me but surely the option deserves some credit when it improves image quality over No AA with little performance loss. Again its just my opinion. Seems weird posting when I've read a fair amount of posts from people in this thread and this will virtually be the first anyone has heard of me. You never know I may post again :)

I think it is a fine feature, more the better i say. I dont buy in to the zealots praise of it, but if you like the effect great if not you do not have to use it :)

I think its mentioned in the hardforum where theyre discussing that article that sharpening would have to be done in the pipeline so its down to game devs to support it so that can happen. Just checked and theyre talking about mixing msaa with mlaa:

Funny to think that fsaa started out really with supersampling on the voodoo 5 and its really not used that much now due to the fps hit. =/

Notice how all the MSAA screens retain their sharpness and vibrancy, notice how the MLAA image does not, it's blurred and dull, some would say out of focus.

I hope they do improve it because in its current state I can only see it being beneficial to low/mid range cards.

The problem is Raven, that BOTH images look like absolute turd, one is blurry with defined egdes, one is less blury with aliasing all over the shop, and both look like absolute crap.

No idea why they used a game which has, to use Rroff's terms, textures for buildings that look playstation quality, though I think they look that way BEFORE MLAA.

What would be a good comparison for me is, do higher res textures that have more detail between the lines, does the MLAA detect edges better on higher quality textures.

Anyway, the point isn't to bring every feature about perfectly first time every time, infact, almost nothing ever in the history of GPU's, or CPU's, or frankly most things in life happen that way. MLAA is a VERY good start and a very likely prefered future method as more and more retarded games come without AA or with strange defered methods.

Its a monumentally high quality AA method for the FIRST driver release, the first time anyones heard about it, anyone who says otherwise is honestly being an Nvidia fanboy. AA killed performance so badly when it was introduced and missed so many edges it was barely worth it, as we moved forward, it became fantastic quality and we're STILL getting new "normal" aa IQ increases, Nvidia still with new generations of cards increases AA quality, 10 years, 15 years after it was introduced, but MLAA sucks because its not perfect right off the bat?

Hi DM, Nvidia had quincunx AA back in the GF3 days, works just as MLAA does, google it. In fact it's still used in some PS3 titles like justcause 2. Just as MLAA is used on some Xbox360 titles.

Its not the first time anyones heard about it tho nVidia had something very similiar to MSAA + MLAA with Quincunx years back, game developers have been using a similiar system for blurring the edges of shadow maps (where the loss of detail doesn't matter), etc. some games even implement their own form of it, mafia 2 uses something thats not entirely unrelated.

When is everyone going to chuck bashing new tech on the PC?

Is it not better to have the option of using Morphological AA than not having it at all?

Quote from Hocp- 'The GPUs of today are powerful beasts, and it is no surprise to anyone that there is unused potential lurking within. Some are trying to expose that potential by forcing proprietary methods of using the GPU for accelerating physics in games. Others are using that same potential in the GPU to apply filters using industry standards that help one of the most annoying and image quality sucking facts about gaming, aliasing.'

How anybody can rubbish Morphological AA that has not used it baffles me anyway, the same goes for phys-x, apart from the fact it's disabled when it detects Ati hardware.

It's funny that mostly the people who argue that phys-x is down to personal taste are the ones doing most of the moaning about Morphological AA.

Somebody's going to get a new name soon 'The Blur' You know who you are! ;)

No ones bashing it... which is the mistake certain people are making... we are just saying its not the next MSAA as some people are trying to make out...

ravenxxx2 you really do like to dive head first into any amd thread thats posted around these forums nit picking at anything as long as your trust nvidia fanboyism keeps sticking around i refuse to listen to anything you say in amd threads.

who gives a rats A** if some of the games images are a bit blurry its used mainly for games that dont have normal aa we will stick to useing this with our amd/ati cards you can stick to useing what ever with your nvidia kk.

Quincunx has several other disadvantages over MLAA, none the least the storage overheads are comparable to MSAA.

Excuse me, what gives you the right to dictate what someone posts, I'm posting on topic and constructively.

If you don't like the break down of mlaa IQ then look away or reply in a constructive manner.

There have been a number of AMD fans claiming MLAA looks better than 32xAA lol, I'm dispelling that view.

No, what you are doing and i have noticed it around these forums in graphics cards threads that most of your input seems to be akin to TROLLING.
this is the last time i will reply to you on this subject but be warned most people around these forums agree.
