Hardocp review mlaa

Actually 2 people who've posted in this thread have made such claims in another related thread and their posts here are referring to that thread;

Which is where some of this stems from.
I see, I think I know about 1 other thread about MLAA which I only read the first page of, but I don't really fancy going thru the whole thing as it did seem to start to go around in circles so I'll take your word for it. :)

Just a quick question for those people who think tha MLAA degrades IQ, which would you prefer to use out of no-AA or MLAA if those were the only 2 options in a particular game?

I think that MLAA is an improvement compared to no-AA myself, I think it improves (not degrades) the image and makes it look more natural. Zoom in on any photo from a camera and you well see what I mean.

Of coarse it's never going to be as good as FSAA... I'd always go FSAA if I could, but FSAA isn't always an option, especially for people with huge screens who want to use native res.

Like LeJosh and MikeHunt79 I prefer MLAA to no AA but would rather use the MSAA if I can keep my FPS above a reasonable level. I assumed (perhaps incorrectly) that this was it's purpose, that is a form of AA that you can use when the alternatives drop the fps beyond the acceptable/ desired. This is the first ATI/AMD card I have owned and like Rroff I don't see it as a replacement or even a strong enough reason on its own to choose ATI/AMD over Nvidia. And while I think Rroff's allegiance is clear (for the record I have no bias towards either but I'm not opposed to brand loyalty), I don't think he is being unfair.

MLAA is defiantly reducing the edges (equivalent to 8xAA or even better) but it is blurry, because of that even the 2xAA look more pleasant to the eye than MLAA.
But still it is a nice feature to have, especially for low-end cards.

Funny how people always tend to side with the card brand they own, rather than actually take a neutral standpoint and compare the two.

It's obvious it makes the image look better than just pure aliasing. It's also a pretty new feature, and assumingly not finished yet. Take MSAA for example, it goes up to what, 32 now? It didn't on release.

Things just need to mature.

OCP love AMD no surprise they do a favorable review. Anyone can tell the complete loss of definition even from OCP's own screens, you can hardly make out formula 1 on the banner in the mlaa shot.

lol blurry vision..

Without wishing to draw the wrath of the AMD army, I notice that this particular screenshot has large amounts of uniform coloured/textured faces, probably a best case scenario for this technique.

My personal opinion on this feature? From the screenshots I have seen it appears to be similar to when you run a cheaper LCD at a non-native display resolution. Not something that I particularly like, but I can understand why some people would prefer it over nothing at all.

I don't understand why some complain at mlaa. As most gamers are aware, true antialiasing techniques can improve image quality but the side effect is a performance hit. The feature is for low to mid range gpu's so that is a bonus. Those screenshots with mlaa don't look that bad at all. Some who like to take in the scenery of the world and surrounding objects in a slow paced video game might pitch a fit. But then again if you're only budget for graphics hardware is under a couple of hundred quid, what do you expect. Obviously mlaa is not meant for high end amd graphics hardware. But each to their own i suppose.

It looks rubbish, anyone you thinks otherwise is blind, It blurs the image to much,, it's a cheap version of AA for mid/low cards.

No, what you are doing and i have noticed it around these forums in graphics cards threads that most of your input seems to be akin to TROLLING.
this is the last time i will reply to you on this subject but be warned most people around these forums agree.

Brilliant post, Warning someone that most people around these forums agree...
How many members does this forum have ?
And how many have you spoken with directly. You sure your not doing damage limitation on ATI for the card you are selling on the MM. Not nice is it when people make aspertions

I've just read that, and can't balance it with some comments in the thread.

It actually retains texture detail really well, it's just edges it's softening, which actually to my eyes gives it a much more filmic/realistic look.
Having suffered Quincunx on many PS3 titles that softens everything horribly including all textures, which is terrible, this seems quite an intelligent compromise IMO.

It's not perfect, but as long as it can hold on to texture detail to a reasonable degree, I'd say it has merit.
