ive just made a system a barebones system . everything works great. appart from my hardrive over heating to to the point were touching the side of my case is like putting your hand in boiling water causeing the system to just freeze. its a old wester digital 80 gig. before i buy a hardrive . could this be caused by anything else other than just a old broken hard drive . thanks a lot . craig.

Sounds like it's way too hot in there, not enough case ventillation?
If it's caused by the position of the 3-1/2" drive cage (not getting enough air from the case fan) I would put the harddrive into one of the 5-1/4" bays instead - at least it will be cooler there.

Yes it can if there's a dead area in the case that get's no ventillation. Unlikely to be the drive causing it though - more likely the CPU will bomb out first as it's more sensitive. Even so, a hot hard drive will have a much reduced lifespan - try to keep it around 45deg or less if possible.

Its the AOpen XC Cube AV EA65-II . i know its cheep but i was just putting my old systems parts into it. maybe the result of installing windows doing formats etc. mite have got it hot. once im home ill give it a try again and get some temps recorded.

thanks a lot . Craig.

Hard drives get hot enough to burn you? christ, I have never felt an hard drive that has been anything more that a bit warm to the touch!!! I agree sounds like you have a dead spot, see if you can fit a little fan in near the HD somewhere, get a bit of airflow on it

Try getting a HDD cooler or better ventilation to your system.

Try opening up the side of your case, see if that helps in the short-term.
