Harmonix Developer on the PS3

Be very interesting to see how Assassins Creed shapes up on both consoles, bound to be a lot of comparasins going on with that little number after all the problems they had

Except he knows what he's talking about and people here don't.

Lets put it this way, he's fundamentally and factorialy incorrect and leave it at that.

In fact, as proved by the comments section in the same blog, by a develper who DOES know what he is talking about.

Just like a lot of developers who came out and poured scorn over the "cell slow and broken" article last year.

The devs sound like there preachiong the EA methology of ps3 support. Quickly port a game as fast and sloppy as possible to ps3 and still expect people to pay 40-50 quid for it.

Quite a few games (especially tjhose by ea) dont geta second conciderartion on ps3 when im choosing a game to buy for my ps3 just because i know they spent no time and effort making sure it plays on ps3 as good as on 360. real bad idea to but there trashy game demos on psn too as they tend to make sure i stay away from the game ;)

my money goes to those that can make a quality game and/or do make a decent effort with porting games for my ps3. If ea some how manage to screw up burnout paradise on ps3 , ill just not bother with anything from ea ever again.

It's not just EA though?
It's everyone bar Codemasters (and DiRT isn't good anyway).

Why do people think it's sensible/funny/clever to always blame EA? It's actually quite annoying.

why exclusives often suck:

saw that and thought, yep he must be a MS fanboy, lol

Motorstorm, Resistance Fall of Man, Ratchet & Clank, Eye of Judgement, Folklore, Heavenly Sword never mind all the other exclusives that we haven't even seen hardly suck , LMAO

I'm expecting Assassins Creed to be a typical port which will be better on the 360

I hope it's more like Dirt and Better on the PS3. NOT to get one over on the 360 people, NOT so I can go nur nur, But so we can actually start to be civilized in here and realise both consoles are pretty nice, and capable.

IIRC wasn't it started on the PS3? I am sure it started life as a PS3 exclusive, or at least only announced on PS3 at first.

Yeah it was, In the beginning it was going to be a PS3 exclusive, then mr Gates emptied his wallet.

I have links somewhere, Hold on...

Not the quote I was looking for, But relevant none the less :P

Assassin's Creed struggling to fit on 360 DVD
By Wesley Yin-Poole - 12/10/2007 - 10:59am GMT

No such issue with Blu-ray, but PS3 memory causing problems.

The developer behind hotly anticipated stealth game Assassin's Creed has revealed details of its struggle to make the game as good on the PS3 as it is on the 360.

The game's creative director, Patrice Desilets, told Pro-G in an interview that one of the biggest challenges the team is currently facing is fitting everything into a 360 DVD disc compared with Sony's Blu-ray format. Conversely, he revealed that the team was "really struggling right now on PS3" because of memory problems specific to Sony's console.

He added that the developer, Ubisoft Montreal, had drafted in help from both Microsoft and Sony to make sure the game has "the same quality on both systems".

"The PS3 version is as good as the 360 version. We've been showing the PS3 version at E3 this year, but we've done a lot of events and it's just easier for us and for people from the press to have a 360. But the versions are the same, basically," he said.

He added: "Both have their own challenges. Right now we have a big challenge on the 360 to make it fit on a DVD, to put five languages, to put all the data on eight gigs. On the Blu-ray side we're really good, but then the memory is quite different. How we handle memory is really different between the two machines and we're struggling right now on the PS3. But we have people who are really dedicated and we're having help from Microsoft on one side and Sony on the other side to have the same quality on both systems. It really depends on the week basically as to who's best."

Owners of the PS3 will find comfort in the comments, having suffered some poor quality ports of 360 games since Sony released the console in March this year.

You can check out the entire video interview with Patrice next week, where he talks about the possibility of using Assassin's Creed's technology in other games and why the PS3 version will not make use of the Sixaxis controller's motion technology. If that's not enough for you, you can check out our hands-on preview of the game later today.

Yes :p tbh a lot he said people knew about anyway and talked about on this forum, there will alway be one console easlier to work on .
Trouble with sony they do it their way they did it their way with ps1,2,3,i do think as time goes on the 2 console will get closer because dev will get the hang of the ps3.
Most dev's will just get on and making games for both and will get better results as time moves on,i think there was a large learnig curve for the dev's of the ps3.

What a load of cobblers.. There are loads of devs over on Beyond3D that seem to think that the PS3 is absolutely on par with the 360 and both have some areas they excel in..

I do agree that the PS3 on the whole isn't as powerful as Sony are marketing it as, but as a system it's amazingly well matched to the 360. we know the rough differences, and we know that devs should develop games that exploit both consoles strengths, but no-one would be mad enough to say one console 'trumps' the other...

I'd say that Sony do seem to be affording certain games some uber long development time, which will result in technically excellent games, but this isn't necessarily going to be from any superiority of the PS3, just unprecedented development time of a game..

The fill rate response makes me think this guy isn't as knowledgeable as he is making out, I've seen the theory explained on other forums by devs that insinuate they can get excellent fill rates from the PS3..

Frankly the most worthy post here.
It would be great if those brandishing the term 'fanboy' realised the irony in what they're posting.

Lol, so once we all admit the PS3 is more powerful we can all get along?

You've been listening to Kaz again haven't you?

HIRAI: I have heard many people say our competitors’ systems are just as powerful as PS3. That simply is not true. No other next-generation entertainment system pushes the envelope on advanced technology like PS3.

It's interviews and statements like that (remember the infamous it's just an xbox 1.5 one) that cause the most problems. With Sony reiterating that the PS3 is a generation above the 360 despite multiplatform games looking as good if not better on the 360 and some developers backing that up just adds fuel to console fued. I think it's this very recent interview with Kaz that provoked this developer blog response.

What I get from this interview is a belief (shared by many) that the PS3 is a very powerful but fundamentally flawed machine. Good developers can make up for these flaws by repeating information on the disc, using spe's to do basic hardware tasks etc. to make games that look as good and sometimes a little better than 360 games but these flaws hold it back from being 'more powerful' per se. So? It's good but not as good as Sony keep maintaining which was really the point of his blog post.

Why do people care so much about these facts and stats, Do people want sony to fail? Because if they do, Then thats just silly.

I'd love for Sony to take off, And blow the market apart. Why? not because i'm a brown nosing fanboy. But because I want to see some amazing games!!

360 although amazing, Makes me still want more, If the PS3 could produce games better than the 360, Why would that be a bad thing exactly?

Its not a bad thing that the 360 is out performing the PS3 at the moment is it?

Anything that can put a good game in my lap, is a bonus if you ask me. And the better the game, The better right!?

People who want companies to do bad, and laugh and applaud when they do, Need to figure out where their priorities lay.

Well said, best thing anyone has said on here in ages. Why would anyone want a closed market with microsoft dictating it (or Sony) we need competition to push the consoles or everyone will get lazy.

Lol, so once we all admit the PS3 is more powerful we can all get along?

No, So that people can start realising it's down to what the developers do with the hardware available. If the game looks or performs better on the PS3. Then brilliant right? If it performs the same or better than Assassins creed on the 360, Then that's a good thing right? If the 360's version is better than the PS3 version, Then that's nothing new really.

Surely we want breakthroughs right? Not more failures.
