Has anyone applied to Google before?

My flatmate worked for google for one of their summer of code projects. They basically paid him a load of money for doing sod all work :p I can get you in touch with him if you want.

He's far from a bad programmer as he now writes PS3 code for Sony.

Ahhh finally an explanation :D
(Kidding ;))

Back OT, so I guess Google is a far cry from the place we have seen in pictures where they can sit back and get massaged, or take a swim, or play video games all day long.

No offense but you sound like someone that has been rejected by them?

None taken, when I was your age Google didn't exist. I've been around programming circles for years, and known people that worked from everything from Google/Bank/EA/BT.

I just don't see the point of working for a startup that isn't anymore, the free massages and food is gone, you can't pick a project without your manager going ape**** on you and your expected to work 16 hours a day. Sounds like hell to me :)

Smart people with a bias towards "live to work" will get a lot done.. I don't think it's especially surprising or sinister on Google's part

Yeh but if an employee doesn't wish to work extra then who can stop them ?

:p

well thats what will happen to them basically - they will stop - right at the level they are at - followed by being shunted into a lateral move at some point into one of the boring dead end roles that every company has.

9-5 doesn't tend to exist in these sorts of orgs unless you're **** hot at what you do - or you're happy not progressing and just doing some menial task no-one else wants in return for min pay rises and no career progression.

Hmm.. some interesting comments. I think it's harsh on Google, mainly because I imagine lots of people who join them, do so looking for the kind of job where you want to stay there late.

I know a couple of people who work at Google and a couple of former employees.

They all had a lot of interviews before getting the job. And by a lot, I mean over a dozen.

Google is a company that suits a certain kind of person. If you love coding, it's a great place to work. You'll get to work on lots of cool projects and even use company resources to work on your own hobby project. Google try to satisfy your every whim (three free meals a day, do your dry cleaning, get doctors on-site to see you, etc) so that you can focus solely on your job. If you're a hardcore programmer then there's no better environment.

However, if you see coding as a job and nothing more then Google aren't the company for you. The hours are long and the pay isn't spectacular.
