Has anyone gone from a 2500K to a 6600K?

I read somewhere that in gaming terms, you can get a 25% increase in FPS by making this jump. Has anyone done it? Not getting performance issues as such (GTX980) but the cpu is getting a bit long in the tooth now.

Thanks.

I think the general consensus will be to stick with what you've got currently.
What games would you typically play?

The newer motherboards is the thing that'd tempt me to Skylake at the moment.

Currently rotor

Arkham Knight
A bit of AC Unity
Evil Within
bit of GTA5

I usually upgrade parts during the Xmas holiday when the weathers bad and the missis isn't interested in going out anywhere. It's coming up to 'that' time.

I am going to upgrade from a 2500k to Skylake, but I think going from a 2500k to 6600k is not a big enough jump for me. It has to be an i7 for me to make the jump, though the new 170 chipset was another reason I wanted to upgrade to.

I have already bought a MSI Z170A Gaming M7 motherboard as it came with a free cooler, also have some Kingston HyperX ram.

Just waiting for a reasonable priced 6700K and a new case, I'm in no rush :D

One of the reasons was the 170 chipset, for things like M.2 drive and usb 3.1. Also I wished I had bought a 2600K instead of a 2500k, that is my only regret about Sandybridge. I also think the 6700k will push my 7990 a little harder than my 2500k dose, plus I have the upgrade itch.

Though I will be changing my 7990 next year to ;)

I guess such an upgrade would only be worthwhile for those that play seriously CPU intensive game such as mmos or RTS.

Imagine pairing up with a monitor that has Freesync/Gsync range starting from 30Hz, and the 2500K is only able to keep the minimum frame rate at around 24-25fps...the upgrade from the 2500K to 6600K, pushing the minimum frame rate above 30fps could be a big deal.

But yea such a circumstantial requirement would bit quite niche, comparing to the mainstream gaming requirements.

Wanted to go skylake but couldn't justify the expenditure for the overall meagre increase... Ended up getting a 2nd have I7 - 3770K and loving it.. will last me a few more generations I think.. then will have to upgrade the lot...

Currently running a 2500k and Iam looking to make the jump, whether it's Skylake or X99 I am not sure yet.

Main factor for me is my Mobo was cheap all those years ago and I can't overclock, so I am stuck at 3.3GHz so to get any more I might as well upgrade everything.

Last week i purchased the i5 6600k and msi board bundle for £300

this was to replace my i5 2500k and asrock z68 board

i also went from 16gb ddr3 to 32gb of ddr 4

This machine is quicker and smoother than the old setup

However, i had a genuine reason to do it as my wife wanted a pc for playing wow and i already had a case/monitor/gfx card/ hdd ect.

would have i had done it if i didn't have an oulet for my old stuff ? probably not

I would like to add

for my purposes(gaming and browsing) the 2500k setup was enough and no I wouldn't bother making the jump to pretty much anything right now

However, having used both systems recently I feel for the price the 6600k and board combo make a decent gaming platform for relatively low price.

From what I've been reading Skylake gives a substantial leap in gaming performance even over Haswell (Several games show a 10 plus fps improvement between my 4790k and the 6700k which was a surprise), For example in this video you can see some good increases so when you also add the small performance increases we got from Sandy through Ivy to Haswell/Broadwell and then this increase to Skylake it's a fairly decent improvement.

Getting a 14 fps increase in far Cry 4 at 1080p going from a 4690k to a 6600k is pretty good, 10 frames in BF4. Others show the usual 2, 3 or 4 frame differences but even those with the othen gen imporovements must give the game a significant improvement over Sandybridge.

At the end of the day the question is, Are you seeing performance from your cpu that you are unhappy with? If in some of the games you play the answer is yes then Skylake is a decent upgrade. But if you are happy with Sandybridge and in truth it's just an upgrade itch then do yourself a favour and buy some cream. Or a fancy new G-sync/Free-sync monitor.

Got new GPU - 980 TI and kept my i2500k at 4.4 Ghz - got big improvement in games and doubt Skylake would have made much difference - no AVX512 in it too, might as well wait until Cannonlake shows up on 10nm, probably in 2018 at best.

I am in a similar situation OP, with a 2600. I also read the reviews where Skylake has a 25% increase over Sandy bridge but when I look at the actual benchmarks, on my gpu at my res a skylake 6700 gets 4 FPS (59 FPS v 55 FPS in GTA V) more than my three years old cpu. I don’t understand. Is that 25% in synthetic benchmarks (which I will never use) because I can’t see it in the gaming benchmarks?

Would I be better off waiting until next year?

Yea most real-world tests show the same. The biggest gap I saw was 8fps at over 120fps :/

How big will be the gain for a game thats CPU intensive?, I'm on [email protected] and play Guild Wars 2, that game eats fps like no tomorrow even with a good gpu as its very cpu dependent and not very well optimized either. A 10 fps increase would be a good gain here.

Anyone had a 2500k and plays Guild Wars and upgraded?.

I have a 2500k @ 4.4Ghz and also contemplated upgrading but looking at the benches it just didn't seem worth it, most of the bigger gains tended to be in games with an already high frame rate so I decided to invest the cash in 980ti instead.

Truth be told I'm quite attached to the old 2500k, it's just done me so well, I like that it still manages to keep up, I'm half temped to upgrade my cooler and try to push a bit more.
