Has anyone gone from a 2500K to a 6600K?

I won't move from my 2700k until either a 50% overall gain is achievable, or it starts to no longer meet my needs. Currently it eats through anything I throw at it with my current overclock.

Found this post on the overclock.net forum, I thought people may find it useful, I've put the results in spoiler tags, so there's less clutter.

i5 2500K 4.5Ghz vs 6700K 4.5ghz in games, using GTX 970 @ 1080p.

Link >> http://www.overclock.net/t/1578480/i5-2500K-4-5ghz-vs-6700K-4-5ghz-in-games

Because nearly everyone don't know how much better Skylake is in games vs Sandy Bridge and still think Sandy Bridge can match Skylake in game I run some tests...

I already posted this in the Skylake owners club, but every day someone asks how Skylake is performing vs Sandy Bridge and they get the same answer, it's small difference, so I'm creating this Thread.

If GTX970 don't bottleneck there is massive gain in games like crysis3-more than twice faster than 2500K
Watchdogs 60%
Skyrim 47%
WOT 37%
Witcher3 37%

HT ON/OFF it's same. Only in Crysis 3 and Watchdogs are differences. It's GPU bottleneck with Skylake. (Skylake is too strong for GTX 970 even with HT OFF.)

i7 6700K 4.6Ghz
3000Mhz DDR4 CL15 1T
GTX970 1500/8000

With HT OFF 6700k is faster in Crysis 3 by 33% and 41% in Watchdogs vs 2500K rest is same like in first post.

Safe to assume that a 2700k wouldn't have as big a difference then, looks like I am good until 7th gen :D

Yeah no point, it's better to blow the cash on a better GPU if you are at 1440P or higher.

So is it the threads or the raw power that's making the difference? I thought games only used the 4 ?
Raw power, but the difference does not seem really worth it for gaming. Maybe when AMD / Nvidia release next gen mid-range / higher end cards next year.

I upgraded a few weeks ago from i5 2500k at 4.2ghz to skylake 6600k at 4.5ghz. And yes it is noticebly quicker unpacking zip files etc. The main reason i switched to the z170 setup was to upgrade my harddrive. I had a 2tb samsung spinpoint and now i have the samsung 256gb m2 951. Its amazingly fast!!!! Go for it i say

I think you're just noticing the ssd change lol.

The cpu difference is probably not even coming into play.

My 2500K should manage fine until PCIe 4 motherboards hit the market; I'd like my next CPU to last as long as this one, and don't want to be stuck on PCIe 3 for another 5+ years.

I read somewhere that in gaming terms, you can get a 25% increase in FPS by making this jump. Has anyone done it? Not getting performance issues as such (GTX980) but the cpu is getting a bit long in the tooth now.

Thanks.

You do get a nice performance jump, yes. Take a look at the benchmark below, 2500k @ 4.5Ghz vs 6600k @ 4.5Ghz and 6700k@ 4.5Ghz:

2Ey2AVC.png

Isn't this a best case? If you run a higher resolution and most on here seem to, you'll be held back by your GPU. Crysis 3 I understand isn't very well optimised and requires more cpu grunt to get the best out of it.

Also seems odd there is such a difference between the 6600k and 6700k when usually there isn't much of a gap between an i7 and an i5 for gaming...

Here's another game, if you believe crysis 3 to be unoptimized;

Increasing the resolution will narrow the difference in FPS a little, though as 1080P is still the most common resolution, it's still the most important result for the masses.

I've personally got no experience of Crysis 3 just repeating the comments of others on here more knowledgeable than me :)

As for resolution I'm not sure the masses are dropping £300+ on a cpu and using a £150 1080p monitor? That's why I mentioned users on this forum, we're not really typical of the masses ;)

I've don't doubt a 6700k is a good cpu but I would think the extra £'s would be better spent on more gpu power or a higher res monitor. Would you say the bottleneck at 1080p is the cpu rather than gpu?

I went from a 2500k@ 4.8 to a 4790k@ 4.6. While I never know what fps I get in games (never checked) I could actually see a big improvement in arma 3. Im sure also upgrading from 670sli to titan black sli helped, but arama3 is a more cpu intensive game.

Arma 3 is one of those games that does better with more threads.

Is that using the IGP? I don't understand why Broadwell would be faster than Skylake otherwise.
