Has Valve the killed Half-Life series?

day of defeat was no rival to anything it was **** :D

Utter crap, DOD was a really good mod when it first came out and when it went to source it had a pretty large player base, lack of maps, modes updates and new weapons is whats really drove it into the ground.

I wouldn't be surprised if HL3 was being developed with the Source 2 engine or whatever they will be calling it and maybe releasing it on consoles as well? It's been long enough now that that would actually make some sense xD

It's been such a long time that they must be under a lot of pressure. People love to be cynical and negative so when it does eventually come to fruition it really must be a fantastic release.

the've killed episodic content off leaving half life 2 without a ending, guess episodic content didnt do to well, sin episodes died at episode 1, lol. supposedly half life 3 will smooth over the half finished ending of episode 2 off.

if valve release hl3 on console i will kill my self.
Better choose your poison then as HL1 was released on the PS2 and developed but not released for the Dreamcast.
HL2 was released on the original Xbox and Xbox360.

The difficult third game/album/series film.

Let's be honest - it has a very high probability of being a let down, no matter who writes/directs/performs/creates it.

When you play HL2 these days it is actually a very, very simple game, it's very good, but it hasn't aged well. For me it's too simple now, very linear. I got bored trying to play through it again and the episodes were not as amazing as people state. It is an excellent story with incredible atmosphere, it was one of the best game for years as the time, one of the best games ever. BUT it is a game of it's time. It is NOT a game of the present.

I just don't think anything like that would cut it in todays market. When we eventually, if ever, see HL3 it it'll be something like 10 years since HL2 was released. A lot has changed since then, the demographic has changed, the market has changed, but has the tech changed much, really?

Back in 2005 HL2 presented amazing graphics; the source engine was cutting edge, shader rendering was fairly new tech and the effects were amazing for their time. Plus the physics engine was the best we'd seen, which made it stand out from the rest. It had so much new about it that it couldn't possibly have failed and it built on the reputation of the best game of all time (6-7 years later).

I think they might have left it too late now; and I think they know it. To be fair, the opportunity to release a new HL game-changer just hasn't presented itself to Valve.

I just can't see what they could do with the current/next gen technology that can be so amazingly mindblowing that it is the best thing ever and makes peoples eyes melt and give spontaneous lob-ons. Unless they implement some mind blowing soft-body physics what new stuff can they do?

Advances in user interface etc? I for one don't want to be waving my hands and head around at my PC trying to stack barrels so I can climb up to a window...

Plus a new HL would have to have aim down sights. Not having that just feels weird these days, it's almost like a bit of the immersion is missing. When I replayed HL2 it just felt weird, almost like I was disconnected from the game, simply because I couldn't ADS.

Final note - yes you are not allowed to say bad things about Valve otherwise you get called an attention seeker/hipster/liar/vile creature etc.

JUST IMAGINE IF HL3 WAS A LET DOWN. The internet would implode and their would be riots. The fallout for Valve would be devastating. We all know how fickle and vitriolic gamers can be. Especially when their Gods let them down.

What are the team at Valve actually doing these days apart from tinkering about with ordinary software for Steam. Have they got ANY games in development at all?

No idea, I was day dreaming one day at work at looked at their job vacancies. I'm an engineer and my dream job would be to work on the physics engine for some awesome game. To be honest, I couldn't actually find much about what they're doing at the moment. Most of the vacancies are related to STEAM/content distribution. They do seem to be looking at developing controllers interface devices etc.

Every PC gamer will play the next HL, in whatever form it comes out in, eg episode 3 or whole new game. Has valve kill HL? Lol, no. They probably have plans and they are working by valve-time. Look at Black Mesa, expectations for that fell cos it took so long to come out and it was said to be abandoned etc etc. Despite all the negativity it went down a storm at release and everyone played it.

All the haters are gona swallow their words when the next HL comes out cos it will most likely be awesome.

Also, will it be on console? Yes, but who cares as your all still buy it and enjoy it lol

They are pretty busy with dota 2, been the highest played game on steam for some months now. Still have 14 keys for it myself.

That's the most ridiculous thing i'v ever heard. You only have to be watching the comments section everytime Valve posts something on Twitter or Facebook to know that they still have ridiculously devoted fans praying for any news on the next title in the series.
And you know what? **** the console crowd! It's boring having to constantly draw the short straw as a PC gamer and Valve are one of the few companies that still back us up.
And btw, they are actually helping to develop a console as we speak.

Another vote for DoD from me. Great game, even when it was pre Source. It includes some of my all time favourite FPS online maps to date such as Caen2 and Avalanche (although the pre Source version of that map was superior imo).

It also introduced all sorts of novel concepts in 2005 such as being able to deploy LMGs on bipods and drawing on the minimap.

Edit: Just looked back at an article I wrote about DoD from 2003! The Bipod for LMGs and minimap features all came in with the pre Source version (which went retail in 2003). So these features really were miles ahead at the time.

I'll stick my neck out and suggest that Gabe knows what he's doing. The bloke has managed to convince people to pay a premium for digital content = ingenious.

Premium? Steam prices are only expensive when games are newly released. The same as anywhere else in the world.
