Haswell -E Core i7-5960X, 5930K, 5820K specifications

32GB of DDR3 RAM is also around £300, £140 times are long gone.

You are aware that memory production lines have halfed since former times due to those production lines now being used for NAND, due to massive increase in volumes of smart phones and tablets.

DDR3 prices have pretty much tripled since a year ago and DDR4 certainly won't be cheaper than DDR3 for a long time.

P.S. I got a big slap! :D

Well then I am afraid I won't be buying anything for a long time! lol, £300 for DDR3 is ridiculous, should be £200 or less then id consider it.

No surpise DDR4 is this price as its brand new, but as with DDR3, if some day I do upgrade, its going to be when the speeds are well up to and over 4000mhz for a reasonable price, as with any new ram tech, its new slow (compared to how it will be in 2-3 years) and pricey, but thats just the way it is :)

Pondering picking up an Ivy - E for the core count and see if any good deals on another 32gb DDR3

I've seen G.Skill RAM somewhere else for a much more reasonable price, so that's not what's holding me back, the thing keeping me away is making sure I go for matching colours and motherboard reviews!

The 5960x sounds like a beast but I could never spend that much on a CPU unless it was for work. The other two are what have me hyped.

Oh and apparently it should be easy to overclock your DDR4 to a high level or bring those timings down.

That's not even a dilema. I would have thought it was a given :D

5820K + 16GB DDR4 + X99.

It's a million times better than Z97 + 4790K and not even that much more expensive !

Ive never overclocked before so was under the impression that for gaming at least 4790 would be a better option.

Or I can take the plunge and overclock the 5820 or 5930 if I buy 1 of those. And get the **** kicked out of me by the misses if I arse it up :)

In the review zola25 linked to above, the 5960X keeps up in gaming even with it's low clock speed and not all cores being utilized, when you take a 5820K and clock it to say 4Ghz > 4.4Ghz it will be just as fast as Z97 4790K for gaming and much faster in every other scenario that utilizes more cores. The low power draw of 5960X was a nice surprise as well, 5820K will be even more efficient.

With programs and even games (DX12) rumored to be using more cores in the future, I think the X99 makes the most sense and with those things considered offers more long-term value than a 4790K + Z97 platform. Sure the initial layout is slightly more expensive but X99 is a platform built to have long legs, DDR4 support, Broadwell -E upgrade path next year. I really think you should go for X99 and 5820K now it's here.

Yeah and from what we've seen the new chips overclock really easily, I wonder how close I can get to the 6.2ghz dry ice figure on air :D

EDIT: Oh wait that was with only 2 cores enabled, never mind

Meh I got in quick enough on the board lol

I'm off to see Lee Evens at 6 so you better have listed them before then so I can reserve mine along with ram :p

my question is can you push 5820K to 4.7 without HT on good water setup. If yes i am sold. If not then i wont bother. NEED IPCssssss

If deciding between 4790K or 5820K another way to look at it is this, tbh it's vastly superior for a very little amount more cost.

4790K,

Haswell
22nm
Clock Speed: 4000 > 4400 (Unlocked)
L1 Cache: 128KB (Code) / 128KB (Data)
L2 Cache: 1024
L3 Cache: 8192
TDP '88w'
Cores: 4
Threads: 8
Max # of PCI Express Lanes '16'
DDR3

5820K,

Haswell
22nm
Clock Speed: 3300 > 3600 (Unlocked)
L1 Cache: 192KB (Code) / 192KB (Data)
L2 Cache: 1536
L3 Cache: 15360
TDP '140w'
Cores: 6
Threads: 12
Max # of PCI Express Lanes '28'
DDR4

Quite a bit of difference really, £156.99. Same speed memory and cheapest Sli capable motherboard. (I know there were cheaper Z99 boards but they have been removed due to Gibbo getting a slap :p and this one was the one I had in the basket.)

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel 5820K 3.30GHz (Haswell-E) Socket LGA2011-V3 Processor - Retail (BX80648I75820K) £299.99
1 x Gigabyte X99-UD4 Intel X99 (Socket 2011) DDR4 ATX Motherboard £167.99
1 x Crucial 16GB (4x4GB) DDR4 PC4-17000C16 2133MHz Quad Channel Kit (CT4K4G4DFS8213) £149.99
Total : £627.56 (includes shipping : £8.00).

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i7-4790K 4.00GHz (Devil's Canyon) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £251.99
1 x Avexir Venom Series 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-17200C11 2133MHz Dual Channel Memory Kit (AVD3U21331108G-2CIG) - Green Light £119.99
1 x MSI Z97-G55 SLI Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £88.99
Total : £470.57 (includes shipping : £8.00).

That's nothing really, most of lose that amount everytime we swap out a part ! (Plus you picked a fairly low end Z97 mobo, doesn't even compare to a X99 board)

A little more initial layout for a platform that will def have longer life in it than Z97. Not even a choice for those building now. X99 + 5820K for sure.

5820K 6 core / 12 thread CPU (Spec similar to 4960X, with improved IPC + DDR4 controller), X99 Motherboard and 16GB DDR4 for under £700 ! Bargain imho.

Yup with a cheap end Z97 board you can get it down to £437, but I do agree if building now and not on a strict budget, then Z99 and 5820 all the way.(hence why I had it in my basket ;))

Think prices are pretty good and as expected 6 core Intel for under 300 is pretty much what intel required to do to capture gamers and highend users. 8 core is even affordable to some and hear is far cheaper then intels past prices. I doubt one would need to upgrade for many years !

I predict a volley of 4770k/4790k/ZX7 kits and bits and bobs going for sale on Members Market over the next few days and weeks and months :)

Reviews out in 20 minutes I take it ?

Will do some reading tonight!
