Haswell Overclock help

So i bought a new Motherboard, CPU and RAM a few weeks ago. Went from a Gigabyte EX58-UD5 and a i7 920 to a ASRock Extreme 4 and a 4670K and i picked up some Corsair Vengeance Pro 1600MHz 1.5v.

After a week of using stock speed i went into the BIOS and used ASRocks Optimized defaults for a 4.4GHz which in turn gave me a BSOD every time i tried to boot-up, so i went back to stock and searched online for an over clocking guide i used the one found HERE. I followed that guide and put all my sliders to that what it showed in the pictures and then i did trial and error from then on upping the Vcore by 10 and the CPU cache Voltage by 5 each time it threw me a BSOD.

I finally got it stable-ish and i say ish because if i run Prime95 on Blend it throws me a BSOD after about 10-15 passes but i can play Battlefield 4 for 7 hours (as i did yesterday) with no problems and my temps are only in the range of 60-65 on a load of 100% and 32-33 on idle. I'm running a H100 so i can push it further i just need to know if i have a good 4.4GHz and if i can tune any voltages to get a better Over clock.

I just want to know if i am doing something wrong do i need to change something else. I should also point out that i am using the A-tuning software that is shown in that guide, I use that to find voltages and then when i have good voltages i will put then in the BIOS then i can save that profile and if i ever wish to take the OC off i can just save to a profile and revert back to UEFI defaults. I have to point out that i have only over clocked once before and that was with my old CPU got it to 4.0GHz :cool:.

I shall post some screen shots of what i have in A-Tuning.

What's the default vid of your chip?

Also, if you can play games for 6-7hrs without crashing why do you care if Prime95 crashes? Is Prime95 something you need your computer to run in day to day use?

I don't know why i need my system to pass Prime95 maybe because I've been reading on forums that if a over clocked system doesn't pass a stress test then its an unstable clock. Its the reason why i came to this forum as to get a second opinion of sorts. I also have a lot of questions about over clocking.

It's only unstable if you crash when you're using you're computer. If you're just gaming and it doesn't crash then it's stable. Who cares if it crashes in prime?

Don't follow what everyone else does when overclocking - find your own path.

I think it puts it to 1.230 or 1.260. I'll have a look next time i restart, but i think its in that range.

Is my CPU Cache Voltage okay or do i need to lower or raise it. Anything else that i could be tweaking for better over clocking.

That's very high if that's the default value - you'd be lucky to tease 4.2ghz stable out of it. I had a 4770k that defaulted to 1.19v and it would barely make 4.3ghz.
 
Yes as I thought when i used the Optimized Defaults by ASRock to Turbo to 4.4GHz it defaulted to 1.230 on the Vcore and CPU cache voltage.

No - don't select an automatic over clocking profile in the bios - that will up the voltages (sometimes to a dangerous level).

Select load optimised defaults from the bios save screen and leave everything else as default. What's the vcore?

Did you buy an OEM version or a retail?

Reason in asking is that OEM chips may have been binned by the supplier, whereas a retail one won't have been, as it is factory sealed.

Any thoughts?

Mine is retail. And I can't get it > 4.3 stable on any sort of sane voltage (<1.3v)

It was OEM - from here. And yes, the retail one I replaced it with is much better - 1.04v default - boots to 4.9ghz @ 1.3v ;-)

Interesting. I have a retail 4770k at home waiting for my new build so I can't wait to see how it performs.
I wont begin building until I can afford a case and primary SSD however :(

Seemed like an obvious choice to get the retail as I have heard of suppliers binning OEM chips before. Also the warranty is longer with retail?

When i do that it puts it on Adaptive and Auto.

Hence why i loaded the ASRock Optimized Defaults for 4.4GHz, then played around with it from there, anything below 1.3v and i get a BSoD when running Prime95.

Yes that's fine. On those settings what is the max vcore shown in windows (load up the cores with aida and check with something like cpuz)?

Sounds like you've got a high vcore chip that's not got a lot of headroom for oc'ing. Don't use auto overclock functions - most boards go way over the top on voltages and often get other things plain wrong (like uncore ratio for example).

in CPU-Z it says at 3.6GHz it goes to 1.149.

With AIDA it goes from 1.0951 V to 1.1243 V, that's sitting at idle.

So as i expected i got a CPU that likes its Volts.
