Just a reminder - the TIM is not the issue. The issue is the glue between the IHS and the pcb. Sometimes there's just a little bit too much which creates a gap between the chip and the IHS which makes the heat dissipate slower. Delidding removes the glue and thus the gap which in turn improves cooling.
Better than my first oneI needed 1.25v for 3.9GHz stable.
Ouch, that was beyone a bad chip.
Temps maxxed out at 79c at 1.15v but is stable. That will do for now, although I keep getting the urge to delid! Won't help me clock this chip beyond 4.4ghz though so I should just leave it.
Overclock my memory a while back. Going to try and tighten the memory over the weekend if I got time. Didnt really improve benchmark score for final fantasy xiv - a realm reborn.
i bet you need more volts if you put the cache speed up though.

After expenses I'll end up with around £200, not great but considering the chip is bad I think it's reasonable.
Would prefer to send it back but can't, only choice is either keep it or sell it.
Question now then is whether I'm lucky second time around, surely can't get as bad a chip as this one.

Well my first chip is a bad one and I cant easily sell it as it is delided.
Will be using it in an MPC.
Second chip arrived 20mins ago and early indications are it is good.
Running aida at 4.7Ghz at the moment.
well thats a lot cheaper than a new one anyway

Got mine running 4750MHZ at 1.4. Not sure whether or not to just run it 1.3v at 4.6GHZ though, that extra 0.1v is quite a bit.

Yes I cant complain about this one.
I didn't bother trying 1.4v as temps were already ridiculous at 1.25v but at least you can get it to 4.6ghz, mine struggles to get 4.4ghz bootable at anything upto 1.35v.
What do you need to know with regards to memory? FYI I'm using g.skill ripjaws 2x4gb 2133mhz cl9.
It's not the retailer's fault the chip won't overclock well 
I wouldn't bother with a much higher voltage for 4.7GHz over 4.6, it'd make so little difference. For me if I can get 4.6GHz stable at 1.3v I'm happy (would be happier of course with one of these ones that gets to 4.7 at 1.25v, but there we go).
