Have I been scammed? What can I do?

The best part of gumtree is meeting the people and chatting to them and you usually find out that most of them are just as suspicious as you are that they are being scammed.

I bought an iMac from there a while ago and the guy was faffing and making it super hard to meet up. He would cancel at the last minute, not get back to me etc. Eventually I said that if he can't meet me in the next hour I would just go elsewhere.

Turned up at his house and he was a really nice bloke, his job as a delivery driver meant it was hard to know when he would be in. He thought I might be scamming him and I thought the same but everything was fine. Cash in hand, met him at his house and had 0 issues.

Come on guys, enough victim bashing here. You're absolutely right, he's a little naive but at the end of the day he's still been done over here.

Chalk it up as a lesson OP, probably wont see much from this.

A lot of entertainment for £25.00

There is a lot of scum out there sadly, hopefully lesson learnt. As others have said CCTV would be good from the supermarket. Log a crime number and contact the supermarket.

When selling things via PayPal you always need proof you sent the item. When someone collects you can't do that.

They knew what they were doing and took advantage of you. I'd report it to the police but not expect much if anything to happen.

Disgraceful behavior. What information do you have for them?

Paid through paypal? Meeting at a neutral, non-traceable location? Alarm bells should have been ringing like an air raid siren. Sorry for your loss!

If you have his address, send him an empty envelope Via recorded delivery.

classic scam, op.

you were so caught up in the euphoria of getting the deal you were misguided into the scam.

in future, think, getting a second opinion and check ocuk :D

It might not be a bad idea trying to send him a recorded letter if you have his address from the PayPal payment. He might be wise to it, so make it look all official and put a fake return to address on it from a different town/county.

All PayPal really care about is whether you can show them a tracking receipt to the provided address and that it shows as being delivered. Especially as his claim is specifically that the item has not arrived.

Edit: Alternatively, courier him a large, weighted box for a television or some other expensive item. He will think his luck has come in and won't think twice about signing for it if he thinks it is something good. Poo is optional.
