...Just brought

Asus P5B Deluxe (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz (1066FSB) - OEM
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit

...To replace motherboard, cpu and ram in Sig, but just wondering whether I should have went E6600? I will be OC'in the pants of whatever goes in the socket just like my 3800x2 ;)

Looks like a good choice to me, I'd have (and actually did) gone for a Gigabyte motherboard though (DS3 or DS4)

Yeh Ive heard good things about both boards, but Ive had ASUS boards for ages and just recently built a mates rig using a P5B. Great Motherboards.

Whats the Gigabyte like?

I'm hopping to get at least 3.0Ghz out of this chip.

with the GB boards you should hit 3ghz with that ram and reasonable cooling very easily.

The Asus board is very good. I've seen people with over 500 FSB on it. I'd take one over the DS3 any day.

Looks like a good spec, although you might want to look into some of the problems people have been having with that Geil kit recently. There's similar RAM on the market that would be perhaps less risky.

Why a 6300/6400
you can hit much higher ghz with poor ram on a 4300

With the components the O.P. posted as in:

Asus P5B Deluxe (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit

I personally would not get an E4300...only if you are buying a cheap mobo + ram.

I've used GeIL 6400 Ultra, Crucial 10th Anniversary and G.Skill HZ with my E6300 and while GeIL stuff is not "poor" the difference is massive with the latter two types of memory.

The question is; What reason is there to buy an E6300 over an E4300? The answer is that there is no reason at all. The E4300 is cheaper, comes with a stock cooler (which is decent for what it is) and overclocks a whole lot better while taxing your memory less (better overall OC.)

As an E6300 owner who's used P965, 680i and all the RAM I states above, I say get the E4300. :)

Well the E4300 runs hotter and the 6300 is more likely to overclock to higher levels. If you have the enough FSB on the mobo.

Clock for clock after my testing the E4300 is slighly slower(not really enough to notice)

The 6300 is made out of speed binned conroe silicon thats runs cooler.

I couldn't get my E4300 over 3.5ghz..

Also for 3.4ghz I needed 1.475v
For 3.5ghz I needed 1.55v a massive increase for 100mhz

Also what you have to take into account is the clock speed and the FSB speed.

7x 450FSB 3.3GHZ will be faster than 9 X 370FSB 3.3GHZ Due to the higher FSB speeds.

If it was me I would go for the 6300/6400 unless you have a crappy FSB limited mobo. And of course slowish ram.

You need at least 6400 Ram with 6300 where as 667mhz will be fine for E4300 clocking.

Heres mine 6400 in action @ 3.7ghz :D

I'll agree with easy then, go with the E6300 or E6400.

He has experience with the E4300 and if he says it has higher temps and less OCing ability then enough said.

Hi there, I'm guessing when you say faster your talking in terms of benching etc, nothing noticeable within the gaming world?

Sorry m8...but from what i've seen so far there is no o/c that impresses me from an E4300....if it's highest overclock people are after then the 63/64 are best way to go IMO....otherwise would only recommend it if going full budget!.

3.5ghz @ 1.55v

3.5ghz Orthos stable.Only 2 hrs but I think the block needed to be reseated.

Testing shows that this cpu will not boot at 3.6ghz with any vcore.

3.4ghz needs 1.475v

3.5 ghz needs 1.55 v

The increase in vcore for 100mhz is not worth it.
Also note the temps  Much hotter than my 6400 thats running 200mhz faster.

However 3.4ghz is easy to achieve. The question is should you get a 6300 over a 4300 well I'm unsure.

The 4300 will allow you 3.4ghz with nice vcore and will not stress the mob or ram to much.

Stock Idle Temps

Stock Load Temps

I have installed a 6300 on my mobo last week and I have already run out of FSB.

I would say that the 4300 is a good buy but it needs good cooling.Only get if you are FSB limited or have slowish ram

Why quote and reply to a statement that's been retracted if you knew that?

Not here to argue....but mean as you have gave a cocky reply when there was no need of replying as you did (Quote ) me after all so here's one back... why not do your homework before you post then as you will see that you are not the only E6300 owner as you will find there are many owners of the exact same chip LOL (meaning just cause yours will only do 3.2ghz does not mean they are all the same ).....it called ( Search ) same goes for the E4300 you do some research on a chip before recommending....Oh and by the time i did reply there were a couple of posts i did not see!
