Have i just gotten the best freebie ever?!?

I have found some shops that don't take payment for some time, some leave their credit card receipts until the end of the month aswell. You might just be in luck this time :)

If I were you I wouldn't do anything about it for a few months, just stay prepared to pay the £700

I've occasionally bought items and found that the payment not been taken for over a month, they always end up getting their money though but that's normally when I buy online. If you bought it in a shop and payed by credit card then it's a different story, personally I'd be tempted to "accidently" lose the credit card and get a replacement.

I bought a monitor from the online purple shirt brigade a few years back.

Everything went through as usual with online orders, but for some reason payment didn't disappear from my account. Anyway, about two years later I got an email saying that there had been some computer error back then and that they would be taking the full amount plus a small percentage of interest (something like 2.5% ) from my account within seven days.

Now, I wasn't too impressed with the aggressive tone of the email, and the fact that they simply stated they were going to debit my account - not to mention the 'out-of-thin-air' interest. So, I reported my debit card as lost and ignored the email.

If they had written to me, apologised for their mistake, and asked to arrange some kind of payment plan at my convenience, I would have paid them the full amount happily - after all the monitor had been delivered just fine and I wasn't exactly strapped for cash. But to blame me for their "computer error", and to expect me to just have £300 lying around in my account at a random point in time over 2 years later? I decided that "stuff them" was the appropriate response. Anyway, I got emails for a few weeks and some phone calls to my old address (my brother told them I had moved on but would not give them the address, good lad :) ), they eventually stopped calling.

It can take a while for it to be processed, I say spend loads on your credit card so when they try to process it, if wont go though as it breaks your credit limit (does this work?)

Me wonders how many of the do-gooder "you must tell the shop" crowd in this thread are actually just jealous of the OP (possibly) getting a free laptop.

Me also wonders if the same do-gooders would actually practice what they preach. ;)
:p

Seriously, I would do.

What if his limit is £20k?

You might be lucky, friend of mine a years ago sent off for some extra information regarding a system a company advertised, 2 weeks later they sent him the system with a reciept in his name instead of the info and they never once contacted him about payment!

Don't cancel the card, just like banks they will always find out. May as well leave it in the bank gaining interest, then just spend it when their legal right to it has gone. You aren't obliged to inform them of their mistake.

Working in a Bank call centre, it's amazing how many companies don't take money out of customer's accounts for months after the initial purchase.

Holiday companies seem to be the worst, I had someone who had booked a holiday last September and nothing was debited from his account and then Mid march of this year, he was wondering why on earth he was £800 short in his account.

I'd try and get away with it but eventually pay it back no doubt,

I played tennis yesterday, we paid for 1 hour on the court, but nobody was coming on it after us so we were just gonna stay for another hour. The standard practice here is to just play for free until you get kicked off by the next people... but one of my mates is like the most honest kid in the world and was saying its stealing lol... he went and paid on his own.

anyway, my ethos is to just get as much free stuff/dodgy cheap stuff as you can while you can... because one day someone is gona screw you over, and you're gonna be out of pocket (this will happen)

Cancelling the card will make absolutely no difference, if they request payment it will still go through and you will still get charged by your credit card company.

Why can't I help but think most of those telling him to do a bunk would be the first to complain if they thought a company had stolen their money, and would carry on and on about it even when it was clearly demonstrated they hadn't...

A mate of mine bought a Mac G4 and 23" (i think, might have been bigger) cinema display a couple of years back, the display alone was over a grand. Got it home and the display was dead as a dodo so he took it back to the shops tech support people. They didn't have any in stock so told him to phone apple to get it swopped. Apple messed him around for a couple of weeks before telling him to go back to the store and get them to swop it as it was DOA. Back to the shops tech support dept, they won't swop it as it is past 2 week swop period, salesman walks over 'Hi Mr X, what's the problem? What the screen is broke and they wont swop it for you? Oi tech support geek, get in the back of the ****** shop and get him a new screen or else!', mate walks out happy with a new screen.

2 weeks later, a parcel appears on his doorstep, a brand spanking new cinema display from Apple warranty dept. No one has ever been back to him to ask for the extra screen back!

What a nice result!

Take no direct action whatsoever. If the money is debted, unlucky. If not then score. If you cancel the card thats gonna arise a whole lot of suspicion if a bill suddenly appears, even if you have a reciept to explain the transaction...If you do nothing you have done nothing wrong ;)
