Recently I've noticed a couple of forums vetoing image macros. Their argument is that they bring down the tone of the boards, don't contribute to the discussion in any way and are generally just dull. I'll admit there was a time when I found them funny but now whenever I see one I just ignore it. We've already got rid of Jesus and 'cool story bro' but should be just draw a line under them all?

What are others' opinions on this? Do these things still have a valid place or are they past their humour and usefulness?

EDIT: for anyone who doesn't know, an image macro is a picture with text superimposed over the top.

You might not know what they are, but if you've spent any amount of time on a forum you've almost definitely seen one.

Do you mean memes?

I think many boards kind of self-moderate themselves in that if a genuinely funny image is still funny then no one gets too bent out of shape about it. When it gets a bit tired though ...

*resists urge to post an image* :D

Um yeah for me personally the urge to post images has long since past, but I guess everyone goes through a 4chan phase, rights of passage potentially?

They are getting kinda old hat now. The original/creative ones are still funny but I could live without them I geuss.
