Have you ever been in a long term relationship based purely on someone's personality?

Physical relations are as much a part of a successful relationship as personality compatibility, so for me it's a no.

Edit: And why does enjoying physical relations mean I'm shallow and superficial? If anything it's biological and subconscious, so it's deeper than everything else.

I lean towards personality generally. But they would have to look better than someone dragged through a hedge backwards.

A more interesting question would be, would you be in a long term relationship with someone who looks a million dollars but as the personality of a damp squid?

I suspect for most people the answer would change the older they got.
 
I just searched out an old post of mine that's very relevant to the question:


I had a good friend in the late eighties / early nineties who looked exactly like Magnum PI (Tom Selleck). If I went into a pub or club with him you could literally hear the women gasp and within minutes they were all over him like fleas. Meanwhile I was invisible.... ;) He constantly had girls with film star looks hanging off his arm. We always joked that he could have had more women than all of us put together. I lost touch for a few years then by chance met up with him again. He had a lady with him who one could only describe as dowdy, if not plug ugly. Turned out it was his wife of 9 months.

After a few beers he broached the subject when she went to the loo, by saying "Yeah, I know what you're thinking, she's no looker is she?" It was undeniable so I had to agree. He went on to say he'd had years of dim bints who treated him like he would have treated the loan of a new Ferrari for the week, and got towed around various places as a trophy. He could count meaningful conversations and good natured humour from them on one hand. The money he'd wasted "living the high life" was criminal. He had met this woman and was slowly taken by her self confidence, easy manner, humorous disposition and intelligence. Within a year they'd married and he could not have been happier. The downside was bitchy remarks from bimbos of the like "What the `ell are you doing with `er?". He had honed his reply to "Going back to our home to make some babies" ;)
A lot of young women are totally self absorbed and vacuous. Not to mention cosmetically "enhanced" at a ludicrously young age and tattooed like a Victorian sailor, with the vocabulary to match.
 
I mean, isn't that the difference between friends and your partner. If you aren't physically attracted to them in any way then just be friends.

Anyone who says people are shallow if they date people because of attraction in any way are complete numpties who are either not dating someone or so holier than thou that they have bigger issues than attracting a partner.
