Have You Ever Heard Of................

Be fair, we can't all know the names of every member of every band ever. What would be a valid concern is that loads of people probably have no idea who Pink Floyd are/were.

Indeed. The majority of my friends have never heard of Floyd, let alone Syd Barrett. They prefer to listen to music with a lifetime 1% of that of Comfortably Numb or ABITW part 2.

And why should they?
Pink Floyd were absolutely crap with Syd Barrett.
In fact, I'll rephrase that - Pink Floyd were even worse than they are now when Syd Barrett was with them.
I remember buying Relics and Piper At The Gates Of Dawn in 1970 and they were bloody awful.

However, I went to see a Thin lizzy tribute band the other week and there was a 28 year old woman in there who had paid £7.50 for a ticket and she'd never heard of Thin Lizzy  When they kicked in to Boys Are Back In Town she turned round and said 'I've heard this one down Stoke City' :D

I'm glad too see that everyone has heard of Ali, although I fear it may have taken a lot of bottle to post in here if they hadn't.

I have certainly heard of Muhammad Ali, born Cassius Marcellus Clay in Louisville, Kentuck on January 17th 1942. ;)

Without question, except Big Kev's ;), the greatest heavyweight of them all and I would urge anyone who hasn't heard of him to read about him and watch his fights. I have just about all of his fights on tape and a large selection of books on him and I confess that I almost worship the ground he walks on. There will be some who have never heard if him but in the main he is still probably the most recognised face on the planet.

If you want to see astonishing skills on the ring, then his early fights before his ban in 1967 are unmissable. His 1966 fight against Cleveland Williams is the most complete and flawless display by a heavyweight boxer I have ever seen.

Muhammad Ali V Cleveland Williams, 1966. KO 3rd round.

I will no doubt incur Big Kev's wrath here but I place him above Larry Holmes, despite the master boxer skills Holmes possessed but I will concede that Holmes had the most complete and sublime jab in the business. Ali lost to Holmes in 1980 but he was a shadow of his former self and the onset of Parkinson's was widely believed to be starting and couple that woth Ali shedding around 3 stones in a matter of weeks by taking Thyroxine tablets which left him dangerously weakened. The fight was stopped by the ref and it was the only time he was stopped. A prime Ali would have danced around Larry Holmes for 15 rounds in his prime. Sorry Kev. ;)

The man is my idol, simple as.

I was waiting for your obvious reply and for your information, Flash agrees with me. :p

Are you as surprised as me that there's anyone out there who hasn't heard of him are am I just biased, being a boxing fan?

I am surprised Kev, very. Boxing fan aside, you could place Muhammad Ali anywhere in the world and he would be recognised. I don't think you have to be a boxing fan to appreciate that.

And Flash knaas nowt ! ;)

* Translation. Flash knows nothing *

Yeah, I've heard of him. General cultural knowledge, innit.

I find it more worrying that a significant portion of young people have never even heard of Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Tom Petty, David Bowie, ...

Why should they?
I don't see the point and Tom Petty is a little bit misplaced.
In fact, I'd wager my band who are 57, 48, 35 and 21 have never heard of him.

Well to be honest I didn't know who he was either until recently, watching an X-File there was a kid obsessed with Barrett so naturally out came google and walah I knew who he was.. an yes I agree, Floyd did sound crap with Barrett

:D

Syd Barrett died yesterday if anyones interested............

Because they're damaging their general musical education. Plus the first two in particular were important not just for their music - they were a huge cultural phenomenon.

I agree with you on the Tom Petty actually - that's just a bit of a personal sore point. Tom Petty is awesome.

"I'll get Moore in four"!!!!

hehe

Have a poster of Ali Vs Joe Frazier, 1971 on my desk at work.

This was before my time but I do remember the "Rumble in the Jungle" 1974 iirc. vs Goerge Foreman (before he sold steak grills). I remeber sting up with my dad to watch it. Foreman had not gone past 3rd round and he took full advantage of this. Ali regained his title taking the then very young Foreman to canvas in the 8th.
