While I've seen this work well a lot...

Don’t do this.

I have to agree with this. There's just no way you'll be able to get all the water out without opening it up, IMO, and water damage is a PCB killer.

In theory, you should beable to wash any electrical device with distilled water. The primary reason water damages electronics is due to impurities in the water causing shorts or breaking traces.
I guess whether a dishwasher would be better or worse be whether the soap is able to remove all the impurities present in ordinary water.

As such I wouldn't trust a dishwasher plumbed into the mains no.

At a previous contract, I was working in an office where someone spilt a can of Coke over her keyboard - I grabbed it, flushed it out under a hot tap in the Kitchen and when it had dried out it still worked - much to my amazement

She was not only very grateful but also lovely, gave me a kiss and took me out to the Pub for a beer after work :)

Cans of Coke all round - selectively of course ;)

To me it's less about something being shorted and more the silent but deadly corrosion problem. It's unlikely things will get killed on the spot if you dry them out enough, however even dried electronics can suffer from the corrosion caused by water damage over the long term.

If it's tap water yes, when it dries the impurities don't become airborn like the water, they stay and cause problems. That's why the distilled water works.

I know people who've put car parts in the dishwasher.

I also know people whose wives were not impressed with their use of the dishwasher...

Similarly to the coke, my parents spilt white wine into their keyboard. This was back in 1990 when PCs cost over a grand and were only starting to become a household item. Rinsed it under a tap, left in airing cupboard and it was fine the next day.

On the flipside, late 90s at university, I drank too much whiskey, got back to my student digs and I thought it was a swell idea to puke into my keyboard. That stuff didn't wash out too well :p

If water gets in between the membranes, good luck getting it out.

How do I know? I decided to clean my keyboard with liberal amounts of isopropyl alcohol.

IPA normally dries very quickly but even after ages the keyboard was behaving like crazy. I decided to open it up and the IPA had got in between the membranes and wasn't drying out. The traces then must have been shorted resulting in the keybaord acting crazy.
