Had a similar ominous box in our attic when we moved in.
I wanted to utilise the space in our attic, by boarding it out etc.
Was an hours job to rip off the insulation, cut up the tank (plastic) and dispose of it all.
If you're not planning to use the space, then just leave it be. It looks disconnected from the picture.
