Have you swapped your MSI 7950?

My card is not purchased at OCUK by the way, and is also affected by this issue.

I went back to the retailer today where I purchased my card, explained the issue and they were kind enough to immediately test it for me. However, just like MSI techsupport they didn't see any issue with it, and blamed it on my pc (power supply or airflow). I should try with a different power supply, tidy up the case or remove any dust out of the pc...
And GPU cores can safely reach up to 120°C, apparantly

Anyway, to make sure my pc isn't the issue I took the card to a mate with a brand new pc, removed his Asus 660ti and installed my R7950 TF3. We left the case open, and this time the temperature goes up to 80°C with fans at 80% when stressing the GPU with Kombuster. Again, unacceptable in my book.

Guess I'll just have to invoke my right as a customer to return the card, whatever the reason and just ask for my money back.

I bought it through their webshop and not in the actual store, so it shouldn't be an issue to return. All original packaging is included, no damages at all. The product should be unused though, which it isn't... fingers crossed I guess :(

They offered to have a look at my computer and sort it out at a fee, but I'll simply end up with a bad graphics card and an additional invoice. There is nothing to sort out, the card I bought simply isn't a good one.
It's a difficult situation for the store as well, if MSI does not accept the card for RMA. Sell it to another customer who will hopefully not complain?

The distance selling regs (which apply to web purchases) do not state that a product should not have been used, only that the person has the right to inspect it (by this it is interpreted that you can try out the product) and to take reasonable care of it. An etailer connat even insist that you return it in original packaging although you do pay the costs of return shipping.

The store would not legally be allowed to sell used product as new.

Yep, make sure to post the results in here.
I got these result from various of reviews ;)

OK results just in from two loops of Heaven 3.0:

Max temp in round 1 was 74
Max temp in round 2 was 75

Max fan speed in round 1 was 64%
Max fan speed in round 2 was 67%

Stock clocks and volts:
Core voltage 1031mV
Memory voltage 1600mv
Aux Voltage - no value

To maintain 70°C on ScottiB's spec only took 52% fan speed so clearly something is wrong here, and the noise is too much.

Just built a friends rig with a MSI 7950 TF3, was delivered from OcUK last Wednesday, 34c idle temps on stock fan setting, in Heaven 3.0 at OcUK settings with 1050 core 1400 mem on stock 0.9v vcore and stock fan setting max 62c, fans got up to 50%.

Only clocked that amount as it'll run all of his games at 60fps on max settings, job done!

Maybe you could point them in the direction of ScottiB's post where he suggests normal operating temps in a standard room temp.

Surely, as I mentioned before, those reviews are based on the V1? the 225W not the 260W card?

BTW, please bear in mind that our results were probably gained on a desktop rig rather than in a closed case.

The story of my MSI R7950 TF3 continues. The retailer refuses to take the card back as they claim it works as designed and the problem must be related to my computer. The fans reaching up to 70% under stress is considered "normal", and GPU's can safely reach up to 120°C so that's also "normal". It's all a load of BS, but the card doesn't show any artefacts or doesn't crash under stress so what can I say?
The right to return the product apparantly only applies if the product is returned in an unused state, which I already suspected. :(

Guess there are 2 options for me:
- Resell the card to someone else who won't mind the noise, at a loss.
- Correctly apply thermal paste

I'm inclined to try the second option. Any ideas?

This is why you should always buy from a reputable re/e-tailer like OcUK. Great customer support.

Yep, never had any problems, always get my answear same day or next day morning.
I'm very happy with ocuk, send the card to MSI they will re apply thermal compound for you. If you do it your self you lose warranty...

Hi guys,

So sorry for the lack of clear response. We've had a hell of a time trying to narrow down the issues involved and identify the cause.

firstly, let me just clarify something. The V2 models are based on 7970 PCB/GPU, hence they will run hoter than the V1 models that have been in the channel and in the reviews. That said, the differences reported in this thread are unacceptable, our testing suggests 5C and 3% fan increase in Furmark when V1 & V2 are tested side by side. I've included our data below.

We are 99% sure that the thermal grease application is to blame and will be happy to provide a aid and warranty cover to anyone who wishes to reapply the grease themselves.

The reason for the delayed response is that found it impossible to accurately identify the affected cards. Many hundreds of cards went to OcUK who booked them in using the same stock code as the V1. We were left with a needle and haystack situation.

We will offer OcUK every possible support with this issue. Please feel free to contact me via trust if you have any questions.

Tahiti Pro Tahiti Pro H
Idle 31℃ 35℃
fan duty 30% 30%
FurMark 65℃ 70℃
fan duty 49% 52%
Total board Voltage 225W 260W
Fan Duty: 40℃--30% ; 70℃--50% ; 90℃--100%
