Have you/Will you upgrade to windows 10?

I upgraded 8.1 pro to 10 pro on July 29th last year and haven't looked back.

I tried to resist upgrading my laptop as it worked so well on 7 but eventually the improvements in 10 overcame my laziness.

like it or not windows 10 is the future, my 2p is just go with it
I certainly don't think Windows 10 is the future in it's current state.

Rightly so, Windows 10 has probably been the operating system that has divided people the most. This could be the result of three reasons: 1) Having apps forced into our faces; 2) Because they are alienating people with a completely different Start menu (which also makes attempts to lure users into using apps); 3) Or perhaps it's the data collection methods that's scaring people. Then again, it could be a combination of all 3 reasons. ;)

I will probably try Windows 10 once they have released TH3 (?). But I will be removing the apps and Onedrive from my installation source before I even start to prepare to install Windows 10. It's just a shame I have to spend some time amongst the settings to maximise my privacy.

Problem is if the eco-system they are trying to head towards was really such a big deal for the majority of their users - they'd already be using a Mac (granted there will be some who'd prefer it that way but have to use Windows due to various reasons).

What they should be doing is implementing a simple framework that doesn't limit or push users towards a specific usage style and then let the users build what they want on top of that - the app store could be really useful if it was a framework to facilitate users and developers (especially smaller developers with limited resources) instead of trying to push a specific model.

Stuff like cortana should never be installed whatever regardless when you setup the OS - as part of the "mainstream" default deploy options maybe or by selecting a set of requirements via the app store (or "programs and features" which would be redundant with a properly done app store).

EDIT: It would also significantly simplify Windows update and reduce the amount of time spent looking at an update screen, etc.

You can download the ISO of W10 and use your W7 serial key to activate.

are you sure you can do this? i just read that if you have 7 or 8.1 you just upgrade and no need for a key. If you do a fresh install of 10 then you need a Win 10 key!

I also just made an iso disc buy when it come to verify the disc it came up with error code 0x80004005

With the original release of Windows 10, you needed to do an upgrade from 7/8.1 if you didn't have a 10 key. When the November update came out, they added the ability to activate 10 using a 7/8 key and updated there installers the Media Creation Tool produces when run.

Either way, once your Win10 PC has been online and Microsoft have seen it, they keep a copy of your PC's digital fingerprint. If you ever want to reinstall, you simply select during setup that you don't have a key and when you go online at the end, Microsoft will activate your Windows when the fingerprint matches.

Done both lots of times (upgrading home machines and standalone machines at work) so definitely works with the post-November build.

Good tip!!
Windows 10 is a great OS, Microsoft have just shafted themselves a little by hounding Win 7/8 users to upgrade so much. Should have just let Win 10 speak for itself really.

i got 'stung' last night! Have a W7 laptop and got the W10 upgrade nag screen. I hit the red x as usual and started watching a vid - 10mins in the lappy started updating to W10.

Checked this morning and everything seems to have gone ok, but haven't had chance to have a play yet.

So your going to pass on the free upgrade so those DX12 games will cost you £100+.

Seems smart.

Yes im passing on it, i'll just buy it when i want to go to it, but as i said, long way off yet that, i just don't see the point in going to it yet, when all ill be doing, is the exact same thing im doing now.

But at the moment its free and after July it wont be, thats the point of upgrading now. If you are going to upgrade in the future then there is no point not doing it now.

I guess you dont use a mobile phone then if you are concerned about the data collection methods, or use a credit card, store card, loyalty card, car park, motorway, town centre, all of which use various methods of collecting data about you.

I've got 10, find it faster than 7, takes less space in my SSD, starts up and shuts down quicker and seems much more stable.

A few very old games (Medal of Honor Allied Assault for example) don't work but hardly a big loss!

Installed it on my partners 8.1 laptop - which she hated - and she now enjoys using 10 on the same machine.

If the look doesn't appeal install Classic Shell.

Imo you'd be daft to miss out on the free upgrade for 7 & 8 users.

Aside from a phone all of those are things you do publicly any way, within a phone or desktop OS it isn't unreasonable to expect to be able to disable all and any data collection.

Got it at launch - works great and I even find Win 7/8 a bit clunky and frustrating to use now because they're missing really useful features I use day to day.

Why do people on here and other forums keep trying to "persuade" others to change to W10? If someone doesn't want to change they are called mad, stuck in the past or worse. It's bad enough that Microsoft is trying to force people to change without users of a forum doing the same thing. What ever happened to having a choice? There are many legitimate reasons why somebody doesn't want to change. My old laptop will always be running W7 due to certain software that I need not supporting anything later plus there are no drivers anyway (making do with Vista drivers on W7 as it is). Stop trying to force people, it's pathetic.

If you can, upgrade. Obviously depends on compatibility between your hardware and your software.

I dual-boot my main machine between 10 and 7, as it comes in handy to have the older OS from time to time. Most of the time I am on 10 though most of my machines are on 10, except a 1.4Ghz Core 2 Duo U series DELL E4200, which is back on 8.1 after I found it was getting hotter and running slightly sluggish on 10. However it does now have a 10 license assigned, which is handy.

And I echo this. If someone really does not want to upgrade it's up to them.

The MS Win 10 presentation at computex was interesting - doesn't seem the OS is very well liked by the technical crowd - maybe they got the message that they have work to do though.

Mildly amusing as the MS rep was trying to build hype and it fell flat on its face as 90% of the crowd apparently have little enthusiasm for the OS.
