Should I get it from the PSN Store?

It's quite cheap but does the gameplay really stand the test of time, unlike (looking at videos) the graphics?

Also, how long is it likely to take to play through? I'm not a huge gamer these days so concerned I'd start and never finish it.

Yes you should.

The graphics certainly have not fared well as time has passed but the storyline, gameplay and characters still shine as some of the best ever produced in gaming imo. Chris Beans recently played it for the first time too and absolutely loved it, it's never too late! It'll take approx 40-60 hours on your first playthrough depending on how obsessed you are with exploring, for a 100% completion you're prob looking at around 100 hours.

I played it when it was released and was wowed by the graphics at the time.

I'm currently replaying it by swapping my save between my PS3 (on a 40" LCD) and PSP and must say I'm loving every minute of it despite the graphics.

It's more than playable on the TV but looks brilliant on the PSP. Just be sure not set the PS3 to full screen as it warps the picture on a widescreen TV and makes the graphics look even worse than they are.

Do it! I'd never played it either and bought it off the PSN; playing through it at the moment and it's stunning, despite my hatred of random battles :D

The story is THAT good? I need to be sure!

I dunno, at the time it was the best storyline i had ever experienced in a game, it may be nostalgia playing a part but i've not played a game since that made me feel so attached to the characters and the world in which they existed.

I was genuinely sad when the game ended, i know it's incredibly corny but i didn't want to see the end of the adventure.

Yes definitely.

I recently purchased it and had a quick go (mostly to see if I could get past the graphics being so rubbish - thankfully I could) and plan to play it when I finish Valkyria Chonricles, last time I played it was about 9 years ago. Granted the graphics are just pure rubbish now and haven't stood up well with time. Average playtime for just the story avoiding extras you're looking at I'd say is more like 15 hours if you just purely do the story, if you do all of the side bits though and all of the chocobo stuff / beating the "weapons" / getting knights of the round summon / getting all your guys to 9999-999 (etc) you could rack in 100 hours+ quite easily.

If you can look past the graphics you're all set to enjoy one of the best RPGs ever made. The story itself would have taken a hit though, as some of it's sections required the person to believe what was going on - back when it came out it was doable as the graphics were stunning, now though you'll most likely not get the same feeling but it'll still be amazing for a first time play through.

I still believe it's the best game ever made, looking past the dated graphics etc.

Nothing's quite come close.

I think very few people that like their JRPGs would say otherwise. I did feel as much empathy for most of the characters in FFX and the storyline was also amazing but it just lacked that... something that FFVII had.

Yeah, I'd agree. FFX was just absolutely amazing, but something wasn't there that was there in FFIV. I think maybe for me it was because FF7 was the first JRPG I'd played and the sheer scale of the game was just overwhelming, and I was expecting it to be the same when I played FFX (which it was) but the stun-factor was missing as I was expecting it to be epic.

If that makes any sense at all :P

On a side note, I wish they'd put FF8, 9 and 10 on the PSN :( Or maybe even one day package 6 - 10 up on a BluRay or two like they are doing with God of War.

For me that 'something' is the materia system for equipping magic and summons.

It was such a simple system that was extremely customisable compared to later FF games and added to the gameplay as it was exciting to go out and get new bits of materia to see what they did.

Whats good about the start is that it begins a tad linear until after you leave the city. Heck at the time i thought the boss battle at the top of that shinra building was near the end of the game! :D

I'm desperate to play this again! Nostalgia has hit me.

What's my options, bearing in mind I don't have a PS3, or a ps2 any more!

PSP perhaps?

You're asking if its a good storyline? I personally believe it to be the best final Fantasy storyline to date. That's out of the whole series 1-1000 and spinoffs

Without a doubt.

Heheh, indeed. Has to be one of my all time videogame moments - leaving Midgar and seeing that map. Jaw/floor - etc :)

Oh, and yes (back on topic) - just buy it.

I never played it the first time around but I bought it a year or so ago and just couldn't get into it at all. Thinking about trying again soon. I'm not sure if it's because I played FFVIII first and it just seemed so different from that, or what, but I didn't get sucked into the story like I did with 8.
