just done new install of os and cannot for the life of me get the dvd drive to read any disc, pc knows its there in device manager etc but cannot get to read any disc, i need to get the motherboard cd to run.

any help please

Does the drive fail with both CDs and DVDs?

Presumably you used the drive to install the OS? Will the drive still read the OS installation disk?

What OS have you installed? What are the main specs of the machine? Do you have another system available for testing?

wouldnt install os with the drive, its brand new only arrived few days ago! had to take old drive from father in laws !!
will try in his pc to make sure
strange is pc knows its all there but wont read ANY disc cd/dvd etc

I'm never getting a Samsung DVD drive again :/ I've had a DOA in a Dell laptop, my external is playing up, and had a internal that wouldn't read DVDs, and kept opening itself up after 3 months. Cheap, but in the end, not so cheap.

In short, there's a good chance it's bust. If it's a mechanical problem (like I believe it is on my external drive), shake it about :)

If it helps my old liteon drive refused to read any genuine microsoft discs, the ones with the holograms on. Refused point blank but read everything else fine. Had to copy them onto dvd=r's then it read them.
