Having too much 'stuff'

So I feel like this probably isn't the best place to ask this question, seeing as everyone here is exactly the same as me and likely has little gadgets that they enjoy playing about with, or cables for that one time you may need it.

But does anyone else feel like they simply just have too much stuff? Wherever I go in life, I'll have tonnes of stuff to bring with me, cables that I'll likely never use and heck even if I did need one I could probably pop to a high street store and pick one up.

It's actually starting to drive me mad and 99% of it isn't stuff I've bought, it's gifts from family or friends who have seen something and thought "That's cool" and now I have another item to carry around with me in life or spare cables from purchases in which you don't want to throw away because hey, they come in useful.

Just a mild rant really, I'm sat here looking at 3 storage boxes full of to be quite honest, **** I don't really need but am to 'attached' with to throw away.

Yup, I tidied out my office last month, ended up taking 2 car loads of junk to the tip.

If honest I don't even know how it all fitted!? All the draws and boxes are still full, but there's 2 carloads missing now.

The best way is be ruthless.

Do you need it? No, throw it away.
Will you need it? Maybe, is it expensive? No, throw it away.
Will you need it? Maybe, is it expensive? Yes, keep it.

I don't have much stuff, got the essentials that fitted into my car when my parents made me homeless, the rest I left behind which wasn't much to be fair. Electronic gadgets - other than my basic laptop - just don't satisfy me to be honest.

First world problems!

You have no idea how annoying it is when I want to use my weekend car, but my main car is blocking it in on the driveway! :p.

It took me ages to work out where to store all my skis the other day. Then to compound the problem I had to build something to hold them!:(

On a more serious note I was ruthless when I moved. I ended up with two suitcases of clothes and about 3 boxes of "stuff. Unfortunately my other half decided she wanted another few boxes of my stuff, to go with the whole houses worth of "stuff" she has.

We have had a few "discussions" about the issue over the last few years. She's one of those people that can't say no, so (for example) ended up with about 12 saucepan, 50 glasses and a billion containers collected from deceased family or others wanting rid. We did have a good clear out a few months ago which cleared up a lot of the stuff.

I have very little these days, to the point where I've moved out of a massive bedroom to a really tiny one and even then it's still not close to being full. I have my clothes, TV, consoles, laptop and records/CDs - that's it. I don't care for material possessions anymore.

I go through phases :/ Last summer it was bikes - I now have three.

Laptops are another one. I have three. A rMBP, a Macbook, and my old Macbook. Seriously, managing them and my daughter's stuff - and my iMac with it's virtual Windows kit on - it's taking a ton of time :o

Sigh.

WARNING a few bad words just the poo word, its funny. :D

Mods delete as am not sure. ;)

Thanks for sharing that - That was great, it's so true however.

I think I really need to have a sort out, I've got loads of sentimental stuff but it's just crap I don't need and it's stressing me out.

If you need help getting rid of junk I suggest moving abroad, I chucked away (and sold) so much stuff before I left the UK and ended up taking 6 bags on the plane and not shipping anything.

I think there are still a few boxes I left in my mum's garage but can't even remember what's in them and haven't missed any of it for the last 18 months so clearly it's not very important :D

My loft has a lot of my daughter's stuff in through her growing up. I just can't seem to take myself to throwing it out. Stupid really - it's clothes, and stupid toys.

Just.

Anyway, everything collects.

The worse thing is I have an accessible cupboard in the hall that is literally (yes, literally) full of cables, old hard disks, some old laptops, and just other 'I may need them one day' things.

Bonkers.

Before we moved, half the contents of the loft went, I cleared 2 drawers of clothes I no longer wear and sold all the DVDs as they just gather dust.
A friends son was off to Uni so we gave him a few kitcheny things and we still have a load of stuff I'm not sure we need anymore.
My missus is terrible for hoarding stuff, She had 5 boxes of files from Uni bursting at the seams.
She left 18 years go and we still had to bring them with us.

I went down my local car boot sale with boxes and boxes of old cables and things plus the odd 10 year old gadget. It was all just clogging up my attic. I came back home with £400 for what I considered pretty much junk but couldn't bare to throw it 'just in case'. Well, believe me, coming back with the money I soon forgot about it!

I'd rather spend my day at work on a Saturday and earn money than stand in the cold :o

Yup, very much this. Though - 6 bags? I moved here with one 65L backpack :p Was handy when I was hopping between sofas and spare bedrooms when I first arrived, but now I've been in this apartment for almost 3 years, I have accumulated quite a lot of stuff. Not really toys/gadgets, just...things. Mostly brought home from work by my wife. The place does look like our lives are sponsored by Guinness.

I got rid of a few car loads of stuff from around the house last year. It worked a treat because I was ruthless and didn't hold anything back. It is the only way to do it.

Wait till you've got kids. The accumulation of plastic junk is bewildering. I've said to relatives to stop buying junk for birthdays and Christmas but it still keeps coming. Such a waste of money and resource.

Couple of years ago I hired a skip and emptied the house into it. Probably all fit for the boot sale but as above I couldn't think of anything worse.
