Hazard warning lights

This little episode I had yesterday got me thinking - Due to no fault of my own my car could quite easily have been written off - It was a new Citreon people carrier and my car is a 8 year old Focus so if I had been hit there would have been a good chance my car could have been scrapped - It's 2010 Focus Titanium on 65k with full dealer service history and well looked after. - There but for the grace of God and no more than about 2" gap - he was CLOSE.

That's driving for you though, any car can be written off at any time through someones actions. That's why we have insurance.
 
so do hazards come on for emergency brake assist systems too ?
after earlier thread where someone had said this enaged on their mercedes and someone went into the back of them (and potentially the mercedes' fault since practically a brake test manouver)

Seems the car wasn't as close as I thought it was - he had just slammed his brakes on at this point - looking through rear view mirror it seemed mighty close - must put rear washer on more often

It could just have been that the EBD activated from one wheel losing traction slightly due to a pot hole or bump in the road. Our Punto does the hazard flash when this happens and quite often you won't actually be braking that hard.
 
Obviously neither of mine do, but if I have to brake hard I put my hazards on for a few flashes just to make it more obvious to any drivers following that I'm not just slowing down a little bit and they need to drop the anchor.

Same if I'm going at speed on a motorway and I can see the cars ahead have stopped, I will put the hazards on while I slow to a stop in case someone behind me isn't looking far enough ahead and might not be expecting to come to a total stop.

Very rare you see this in UK. Driving through Germany and this happened all the time. Fair enough , most cars were doing over 100mph.

Thanks for the heads up guys - that's first I have heard of hazards coming on when braking.

I find it ridiculous when haulage firms transport heavy/wide loads during peak times. It just causes massive traffic problems for miles around. They should be made to transport these heavy loads overnight when motorways are practically empty.

Obviously neither of mine do, but if I have to brake hard I put my hazards on for a few flashes just to make it more obvious to any drivers following that I'm not just slowing down a little bit and they need to drop the anchor.

I do this fairly regularly now, it's not uncommon these days for motorway traffic to suddenly grind to a standstill.

Frankly i'd rather flash my hazards to warn whomever behind, than risk someone not paying full attention plough right into the back of me.

During all the motorway closures you mean? What about those with movement orders who the local authorities have dictated the movement time and route to (As would be the case with the movement that caused your delay)?

They are only supposed to activate if you are doing over 60mph as far as I am aware so the Citroen was not paying attention and stood on his brakes by the looks of it OR the driver may have activated them themselves to warn drivers behind that the traffic had stopped ahead.

Do we get to see the video of what you saw .. had you braked rapidly ?
(whether waze/gmaps could give a useful heads-up if traffic was tailing back behind a big load - some of the android hu's have acceldecelerometers)
