HD 6900's Here!

Current rumours suggest release date for 6900 series as Jan 2011, prices for 6950 at $310 and 6970 at $450. I would've thought that the 6970 will be faster than the 5870, its does have 2GB mem although is purportedly clocked at 800mhz, with 85omhz on the 6950.
Looking forward to the 4gb 6990 though!

If the 6870 is pretty much on par with the 5870, why wouldn't the 6970 be a lot faster?

there is not a chance in hell its going to be on par / only faster than 570 and not 580
why the hell would they create a card to be only faster than nvidias 2nd fastest card

You'd be one massively lucky SOB to get a 6970 out of it, 1GB 5870 would be my bet. Don't accept anything lower ;)

Yeah I'm not expecting much, but depending on what they offer really

Should be getting paid on the 20th so hopefully it'll be a 6970 :o

It's annoying when you have to sign your life away for NDA purposes :( Had to do the same at the 6900 launch event in London on Monday.

All i'm going to say is that the 6900 series cards have some really good specs and really nice features :)

AMD have pretty much always said the 6970 is slower than the 5970.

So that slide makes sense ;)

In Call of Juarez 2, the 5970 is 55% faster than a 580gtx, in a good 5 other games its 25-40% ahead of the 580gtx, the 5970 is a massively fast card and its purposefully underclocked just to fit in to 300W, AMD basically regard the 5970 as 2 full speed 5870's and assume you will overclock them, the 5970 is 55% ahead in CoJ2 at stock speeds, which it isn't designed to be run at, how far ahead is it at 5870 speeds or above, which its designed to be at?

The 5970 is massively fast and for the 6970 to beat it in every game the 5970 does very well in, is just not going to happen, the 5870 doesn't beat the 4870x2 in every game either.

Then you've got to remember the 6990 is coming aswell which should rip the 5970 a new one.

Who knows, I never for one instance thought the next gen would beat the 5970, I would expect a 32nm card next gen to struggle to do that, and I would expect a next gen 28nm to struggle to do that. Theres 3200 shaders on a 5970, depending on whose right, there 1536 or 1920 shaders on a 6970...........

Surely it's not just about shader count though, as you're not getting the full efficiency of 3200 shaders due to the inefficiencies of crossfire scaling - with crossfire on the 6900s though that should be vastly improved. It's not a single chip with 3200 shaders - that would kick ass though ;)

Gibbo, any chance that when the 6900's are listed on the site, you could detail what adaptors (if any) are bundled with each e.g. mini dp to dp, etc? Would be a big help in picking up the right accessories for an eyefinity setup :D

Dear Gibbo,

You're Evil. Thanks very much.

Love,

OcUK Graphics Forum Junkies

This :) (and fixed for you ;) )

Gibbo you are a MEEEEAAAANNNIEEE :)

Doesn't matter to me though, would like to see a single card that can beat my oc'd 5850 XFire (when the other one FINALLY ARRIVES - ebay  ) :D
