HD 7000-series GPUs which are reportedly scheduled to make their entrance on December 5

Aren't these the HD7800 series though? They will have the same performance as the HD6900 cards.
The HD7900 cards are what we really want though.

not true, many people are still running 1080p res so they might be interested in a slightly faster, cooler, quieter 6900 series card for less money :D

Yeah, the 7870 could be a cracking card. I saw a report with put RRP at £155 and performance at 6970 levels, but with much less power draw/noise/heat thanks to 28nm architecture. Oh and it has 2Gb, like the 6970...

All that considered it seems a bit mad to buy a 6970 or a 560Ti 448 or even a 570 given that they are all well over £200 at the moment. Massive price crashes in a week methinks!

More people who don't read the article, asides from the fact its softpedia, it both says its a HD7000 launch, and that its not an individual product launch, ie its not a 79xx or 78xx launch, its just telling you what the series is or more specifically outing some of the new features and talking about GCN architecture.

It doesn't mention it, but these things are usually just press events and usually NDA covered, but not always, sometimes you launch an architecture to let people know whats coming.

Either way it doesn't say 78xx launch, nor products, yet half the people in this thread have already convinced themselves, for no reason, that the 7870 will be available in a week........ and will post in a week saying how lame AMD are for delaying again or something along those lines.

lol if you think thats gunna be 155 time to wake up :D

why would they sell you a card as fast as a card they sell for twice the price  makes no sense. it will be 200 quid minimum

Usually prices tend not to go up

The 2011 high end cards get replaced with the new 2012 ones at the same price. Then the outgoing cards get refreshed and fill in the lower end slot.

They basically all move down one, new name, slightly better process, same speed (ish), same price point but in a different bracket.

That said, £155 does seem a bit too good to be true

The 6870 at launch was around £180-200 and i dont see the 7870 being much different. Launch prices historically are usually on the high side with prices slowly coming down then after.

As dm said, from all i have read today it looks like a paper launch. This is what the inquirer said.

"AMD's Radeon HD 7000 family is expected to appear in January for high-end parts, February for cheaper models, March for lower-end parts and April for the entry-level hardware. While little is known regarding the technical details, leaked information suggests a 384-bit memory bus that would support up to 3GB of GDDR5 graphics memory on a card featuring a single graphics processor, and up to 6GB on a card with dual-GPUs.

Although AMD is keeping its cards close to its chest on this particular launch, unnamed industry sources speaking to Swedish tech site NordicHardware suggest that a press event to be held on 5th December will constitute a 'paper' launch of the hardware."

I would settle for £170 for a 7870. Although I have been offered £100 of my friend for my 6870 so maybe £200 wont be too bad :) but and this is a big but if they are £155 then I will buy one the first month then one the second month for some crossfire :)
