HD 7000-series GPUs which are reportedly scheduled to make their entrance on December 5

Hopeful 7970's get released at a similar price point to the 6970's. Can't find it in GBP but the 6970's were $369USD upon release (around £300) gradually dropping closer to the £260 mark.

If so and the performance is all its cracked up to be, provided I can get around £300 for my 6950's I may very well move up to a pair of 7970's and who knows, maybe even eyefinity or 1440p.

15th December 2010 was the release date and £280 for the HIS which I think was the cheapest one. The price dropped a little to something like £260 during sales here but kept its price point for the reference design.
It undercut the 570's by about £20 iirc and the 580 was £150 more cheapest vs cheapest during that time.

If the 7900's have a few months of dominating the performance market I would not expect a price tag of ~£300. AMD must need some decent revenue after Bulldozer's flop :p
I hope bitcoin mining is bouncing back so the 2nd market is even bigger haha ;)

The HD 6000 series muddy the water on price as they used the same 40 nm fabrication as the HD 5000 Series. More like a 0.5 generation step. They were intended to be 32 nm.

I suspect/hope the prices will be similar to the HD 5000 series release as conditions seem to match, £230 for 7950 & £300 for 7970. Short stock may push prices up. The lower end cards should be priced at regular intervals below this, I guess the 7870 will be £200 or lower.

The HD 4000 series were a bit cheaper due to competition from GeForce 200 series released at the same time. The 5000 and 7000 Series had/have a nice headstart on Nvidia's offering so prices don't have to be so keen. :/
AMD "could" try to cash in on this with a higher price point for the 7970.

Then there is inflation to consider, the £350 I paid for my 7800 GTX in 2005 would be worth over £420 now. :)

At the end of the day, we are all guessing.

Hi there

I have it on good authority that the new range of graphics cards from AMD will not be launched untill mid January. :)

If we hear anything different I shall let you know.

Pretty much, although the 4000 series could have launched at a much higher price than it did, I would say the situation was the other way round - Nvidia had to lower prices because AMD's were nearly as fast but much cheaper to produce.

I would agree with your price estimations for the 7000 series though.

It will be interesting to see the die sizes of chips from both companies this time round, given the supposed new architectures and whatnot. I wonder if mid-range cards will be limited by memory bus width given the extra headroom 28nm should afford. :)

Yes, but if a 6970 is going to cost you £150, and a 7950 will cost you £220, then very few people will bother going xfire, when they can sell their card for £100, buy a £220 new card, have spent LESS and have similar performance from a single card solution that uses half as much power.

While demand for those who want to xfire will be there, if the cards are too expensive, there won't be any point and people will just make the move on to the new gen cards anyway.

Now if a second hand 6970(or more likely 6950) is £100-120, and you already had one card, then its more of an option, though personally I'd still move on.

It only really made sense last gen for people to pick up 2nd hand 5850/5870's for xfire, because they got so cheap and the 6970 wasn't much faster at all, but again look at that pricing, EOL pricing on 5850's, £110-120, second hand prices, even less, and that was when the next gen wasn't 80% faster ;)

Once prices shake down I suspect that will be true, but I'd put money on a bit of price gouging early on these days - resulting in a wider margin for awhile.

Why..anyone would think you were worried about people not buying new Gfx cards during the lucrative Christmas buying season...

Were not worrying as if you look at our 69xx section you will see our listings are far far less, if anything were short on stock.

But the facts are there is no 7xxx series coming next week or this month at all, middle of January is when we shall see them.

You won't be seeing any new cards next week - FACT!

I presume you're talking generally rather than with ocuk? Looks like upgrade in 2012 then!

Ahhhh, but you didn't say there wouldn't be an announcement of new cards...

Read between the lines people! :D :p

Would the release of 7xxx cards result in a reduction in the 68xx and 69xx series ? I am thinking if it does I might just pick up another 6870 to crossfire rather than go for a next gen.

makes more sense waiting 2 months for double the performance at lower power draw.

all things points to jan/feb.

If true I will be very disappointed, nothing worth upgrading to from a 470. On the bright side I will have longer to put money away for Amd 7***series and I may even have enough for a top end card. Decided after Nvidia's greed with the overpriced new 470 err..... sorry 560Ti err.....sorry crippled 570 or whatever the hell it is that Amd are gonna get my money......unless they do the same. Console gaming anyone? (Dives for cover, LOL).:D
