HD, BluRay?

There are more films on betamax though.

HD-DVD players can be had cheap though and are quite good for upscaling compared to the equivilent DVD native player.

And Betamax (or at least a variation on it), is still widely used in broadcasting etc ;) (iirc there is still a lot of content on digibeta).

There are a few region free Blu-Rays around.

The majority of Blu-rays are region free, thanks to studios such as Warner, Paramount and Sony. Unfortunately, Fox prefers to have region locked discs, as well as a few other studios :(

It's about time the came out with True 1080P instaed of all this upscaling rubbish.
Hope someone brings out a true 1080P player.

You'll be happy to know that HD-DVDs and Blu-rays have always been 1080p, since they launched in 2006 :)

HD DVD might not be what all the cool kids are buying, but have you seen how freaking cheap they are selling for now?!

If I was buying a new player I would get one that can play both types of discs as I'm not above picking up some dirt cheap HD media.

There are some bargains to be had with hd-dvd movies, im using an lg blu ray/hd-dvd combo drive in my pc, sadly though power dvd 9 ultra has removed hd-dvd support.

High Definition 'HD' is a term we use to describe the resolution and quality of video files. Generally, 720p (720 vertical progressively scanned) is the minimum resolution considered HD. 1080P (1080 vertical pixels, progressively scanned) is considered TrueHD or FullHD.

HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are optical media formats which are used to store and playback HD video. Blu-Ray/HD-DVD disks have a large amounts of space VS. DVD optical disks to cope with the space required for HD video (20-30GB a film!) 99% of films on Blu-Ray/HD-DVD are 1080p however occasionally some are 1080i (1080 pixels, interlaced) eg. Planet Earth on Blu-Ray/HD-DVD. Progressive is superior to interlaced, see here. HD-DVD is no longer supported or produced so there is not point investing in the technology unless you already have a player, in which case you can purchase HD-DVDs very cheap.

I went HD-dvd during the firesales and picked an XE-1 for under £150.

Fantastic upscaler and a great hd-dvd player too. Orignally a very expensive machine.

You can't say one is vhs with the other as beta as it hasn't come to that stage yet and who knows if it ever will. Plenty of people are happy with dvd as is, and dvd certainly isn't dieing anytime soon.

HD-DVD was a great format and being totally region free was also a plus point. But blu ray won out and I got many films for only £3 which im happy to enjoy.

Although Blu-ray has claimed victory over HD-DVD I wouldn't say it has had the same success as DVD yet.

Betacam and Betamax only share the first four letters of their names and the physical cassette dimensions, other than that they are totally unrelated formats.

The XBOX's HDDVD drives are super cheap now and will work on your PC too so if you can still get cheap HDDVDs then worth it :p

Quality on both formats at 1080P is the same and insanely better than DVD :p

Matrix DVD [full screen to 1920 pixels wide]:

Matrix HDDVD [1920x800 native]:

Obviously non digital remasters to HD are even crisper but Idon't have any comparisons other than Matrix, everything else is BluRay only :p

Lots of missing or bad info here..

Blu-ray and HD-DVD are two different type of high definition discs (like a DVD, but bigger)

HDDVD is dead now, no one is making any more players / drives and no more movies.

You'd be crazy to buy HDDVD films now, if your player dies, you won't be able to play your films!

Quite true. The slow releases of classic's on blu-ray are non-existent so far. I can't see DVD going dieing just yet.

Tried to get my dad onto the format and he just said 'f-this' and went back to DVD's. Why? Because various blu-ray titles exhibit the slowest/laggiest menu's compared to HD-DVD's far better system. So I asked him to try out Pirates/Carribean - Worlds End, which was another bad move because it took about 7mins to actually get into the film since the start was crammed with disney logos and adverts. I never noticed these things until he pointed it out. The dvd version just plays a logo and goes straight to the talking skull menu. Arr!

Blu-ray may have won and become the HD format, but it's hardly gone anywhere since then.

Didn't one handle darker scenes better while the other handled brighter scenes with more impact?

No, that's the equivalent of saying different HDDs will produce better image quality in movies stored on them.

They were both just storage formats.
