Hi
Thinking of upgrading my system (see sig.) and buying an OCZ Vertex 2E as a boot drive (though as an aside, I see the prices on ocUK are creeping up!).
So as the advice seems to be to upgrade it to the latest firmware before installing the OS and that it's best done with the SSD as a secondary drive (though current boot drive must be in AHCI mode).
So... as current system is in IDE mode. I cloned the current boot drive (Acronis 2010) just to be safe and to give me something to experiment with. Booted current system from clone drive, did the registry hack to to switch on AHCI in Windows 7, restart PC, go into BIOS and switch on AHCI mode (I also set Native mode on in BIOS... though not sure if that's necessary!?). Re boot again, windows installs new drivers and all appears fine.
I then check Device Manager (I'm now going to show my ignorance here) and found what looks like two controllers.
1) Intel(R) Family 4 Port SATA AHCI Controller - 2923
2) Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller.
Would I be right in assuming number 1) is for the 4 SATA ports?
And that number 2) is for the IDE devices (IE. in my case DVD ROM etc.)?
Now what did surprise me a bit is the drivers it installed for the above.
1) AHCI ... 21/06/06 6.1.7600.16385
2) IDE ... 21/06/06 6.1.7600.16385
These seemed a little old to me???
So downloaded the latest chipset drivers from Gigabyte for my board and now get:
1) AHCI ... 04/06/09 7.0.0.1013
2) IDE ... 21/06/06 6.1.7600.16385
While the AHCI driver is a bit newer, the IDE driver has stayed the same, I would have thought there would have been something newer!
So my last question is... does the above look strange? or am I likely to be worrying about nothing?
Thanks yet again....
