Hi

Might go into town to-day and pick one of these up for the 360.

What i really want to know, is it worth buying at the moment? Or will i just wait for more HD movies to come out and by then the price of the device may have dropped.

Doubt the device will drop over time, its already quite cheap.

Not many decent DVD's out at the moment and there quite expensive, had mine about 3 months and have 11 DVD's. Still recommended from me, looks a lot better than the normal DVD.

If there are HD-DVD films out you want, then its not too bad a deal. If you already have a 360, it is the cheapest way to get an HD film player. They might drop the price of the player, but lets face it, it is unlikely to get much cheaper all that quickly.

How big is your HDTV screen? I had one for my 26" HDTV and even though the quality was better, i didnt think it was that much better to SD as compared to a bigger screen. Well worth it if you have like a 40" or something or if you got a small screen and got spare cash to spend.
Im going to wait to see which format wins, looks like Blu Ray will atm.

Just noticed the HD-DVD drive for sale for £69. Japanese version (everything works the same bar the remote afaik). Special offer until midnight thursday hong kong time.

Obviously cant link but most people will have ordered region free titles from there before.

I have the drive for the 360 its alright, but given the lack of studio support I'd be careful about buying one now. Microsoft leaving a HD-DVD player out of the 360 elite is even more telling in my opinion.

I wouldn't, it has support from all the best studios, there is only one studio supporting blu-ray that makes any films I like, and they're supporting HD-DVD as well.

And MS leaving one out of the elite is nothing to do with it, they just don't want to do a sony and force a product on people that 95% or more of the customers don't want and can't use, and ramping the price up for it.

If you want one, go for it.

It needs more movies, but it's a spectacular format. Good transfers (like King Kong) really do look mind blowing.

The Matrix trilogy is out next month in the USA, so that should be worth importing.

buy it just now if theres films you want - otherwise save your money, i had and sold one as there was nothing worth buying at the time (for me anyway).

Ive got a ps3 and a blueray player but only one film so far, as its the only thing ive wanted to see in high def.

It does look better, but its not that much better - much less the jump from VHS to DVD.

edit: if its that cheap though, you cant really lose out on it if you decide its not worth it.

I bought the one from Hong Kong a few months back, works a treat, as mentioned just get a UK figure of 8 lead and a new remote and away you go. The best remote I found was off the bay too, a HP media Centre remote, cost a whopping 99p and is fantastic.

Oh, as to whether the HD DVD is worth it or not, I have a 32" LCD and I would say its better then DVD but not massivly. on a set over 40" you can really notice the differance.

its a tricky one, 3 months after buying it I still only have 4 films, I really think Blue Ray might win this one which is a shame. Microsoft could have really helped swing things the other way by giving the eliete one built in, but they didnt and that screams warning signs to me.

Im seriously considering selling mine before im left with a betamax

I just wish Microsoft would give the consumer a further choice by offering both a HD-DVD or Blu-ray add-on. They win either way then (to a degree).

Went into a TV shop a little while ago and the guy there thought HDDVD would win because it's got the backing of the porn industry :)

Only in the sense that HD DVD may lose the format war. In this instance HD DVD is not the superior format and thus the best format (blu-ray) should win this time around which is good.

Haha - read the article above - they go into more detail about this. They are only going HDDVD because Sony refuses to let the porn studios use it's facilities to create blu-rays - for obvious reasons.

They just have to find a duplicator outside of Sony and it appears this has already happened.

Isn't this just one of those internet myths that spread during all the Sony bashing that was going on?

Iirc it surfaced about the same time as chestnuts as 'PS3 games can not be resold' etc

I have long said that Pawn isn't as big an issue this time around as a lot of pawn is now downloaded as opposed to purchased on physical (excuse the pun) media.

what are you smoking.

Bluray has THE studio support and will win the format war. Im not wrong on these things.

Go ahead buy the hd-dvd addon and get aboard the sinking ship that is hd-dvd.
