HD DVD

I certainly don't regret buying mine when they were first released, and, for £30, I'd consider picking a second one up as a backup unit.

I only own a handful of HD DVDs, but I've rented dozens and will continue to do so as long as LoveFilm keep them stocked.

I'm not in any hurry to move to BluRay.

As an early adopter, and someone who has a keen interest in going HD, and now knowing that HD-DUD is as dead as the dingo, you are still in no hurry to move to Blu-ray?

Come 2 months time when no-one upon no-one will be releasing an HD-DVD disc, what exactly are you going to do? wish you had a blu-ray player thats what !

Even a free player is a waste of money, cos you'll only need to supply it with HD-DVD discs that soon no-one will be selling and all it will be doing is using up a valuable component connection or one of your few HDMI's....

Steer clear !

the studios have just announce they are dropping their March HD-DVD releases, therefore no more new HD's - whats out now is all thats going to be :(

Thats a bit dumb, its not like since hd-dvd support has been dropped that everyone owning a player has smashed an axe through it.

i dunno where u got that from

but

I Am Legend (HD DVD)

Pre-order. Due for release on 12/05/2008

this is from a major site

By July i doubt anyone will be printing HDDVDs. I don't see why people are comparing HDDVDs lifespan to that of DVD, DVD is not a dead technology and it has its own niche in the market - far more affordable than blu-ray and far more widespread and because of this studios will continue to support dvd for a long time to come.

HDDVD however, has no reason to stay around much longer. No more hardware is being manufactured and if people want to be early adopters and go HD, then 99% will go the blu-ray route now.

If people are buying into HDDVD now i can understand if it's due to getting a few months of really cheap HD media to keep them occupied until blu-ray falls in price. However, people who believe the format will continue to be supported are drastically mistaken.

Here's my 2 pennies worth.. In England where you are running 576P on a regular DVD Unless you have a HD set 42inch or above, then really the comparisions between blu-ray and dvd are very very minimal. Especially when you start throwing upconversion DVD platers into the mix. A regular 32inch LCD thats probably common place amoungst many of your homes really isn't going to make that much of a differnce.

Likewise, anyone who says oh you need 1080P over 720P has just swallowed the marketing hype.

Go 50inch or 60in then the difference becomes more apparant, and EVEN Then 720p vs 1080p is only just starting to come into play 60+

yeah i have a 720p plasma and i can say it is proberly just as good as a lot of 1080p sets out there, i think it comes down to the price and make of tv , mine is a panasonic 37"pv500 and when i got it it was one of the best sets out there and i think it still can compete with a lot of 1080p sets

won't be pulled tbh this would have allready be in production now since this would allready been onsale in the states before march!!

I think it is released on April 8th in USA (I doubt it is production already tbh). But regardless it is a Warner title so Warner said they will still produce HD-DVD until June 2008. (All other majo studios cease production in less than 2 weeks).

As someone mentioned, it's Paramount and Dreamworks that are stopping in March.

I can't see Warner sticking it out till June on their own tbh, but I can see them releasing I am Legend as it is a big film anyway and will make money on both formats.

Easily, Panasonic make the best plasmas out there. I personally own two after toying around with various others. Actually even a 42inch Panasonic Plasma 480P EDTV (not sure if they exist in blighty) using its own downconversion from a 1080i or 720p wipes the floor compared to most 720p / 1080P native plasma's, so good it's quality is ! Actually if the truth be told, my Panasonic 42inch 480P EDTV Plasma is as crisp and as clear and detailed as my 42inch native 720P Panasonic Plasma.

I'd bet I could take any fool in off the street and ask them using the same source and asking them hey which pic do you think is better? and it would be a hard push...

1080p stuff looks a ton better than 720p on my Samsung LE40M86BD. Games aren't noticeable because hardly any are rendered at 1080p, but movies are hugely different for me.

yeah it proberly would but thats on the same display i was just saying theres certain displays out there (720p) that can compete with 1080p displays , for instance (im not saying it will ) my pv500 could look very simular in picture quality to your 1080p display

Yea i agree. Some 1080p panels are known to be built with cheap screens, so the majority of 720p screens will look better than it. It also depends on the content. Some movies have virtually no difference in quality when displayed at 720p and 1080p. Lots of factors come into play with HD stuff, its not always "1080p movie = amazing quality".

It makes me sick that you can buy Blu-Rays on the net for £8-15, but you walk down the high street and they're £24.95 a pop.

I don't really care where I get mine from, yes, if I want a movie I'll go out of my way to order off the 'net, but sometimes I'm pottering around Asda with the mrs and think "I'll go pick up a film for tonight" and the amount of times I've just laughed at the prices.

That said, Asda aren't too bad, but the point is the same.. I can see why the public isn't buying them, the price on the high street needs to come down, soon!!

Same here - I got the same set as you - it's a great peice of kit when you've fiddled with the hundreds of settings . Black is almost black - for an LCD thats great and it beats most plasmas :D

plasma has the better picture though for most.

if i asked someone to compare my pv500 plasma (720p) to an top lcd screen 1080p it would be very tight in quality

i dont want to start a lcd v plasma war by the way :p

You definitely have to bring screen size into the equation when looking at plasma and lcd, difference is hardly noticeable sub 40 inch
