HD failed?

My PC started failing to start today, sometimes without detecting a disk, sometimes with. I put it in a friends machine and it got to windows, detected the drive, then froze with a high pitched sound coming from the drive.

I can still try a new cable, but i`m begging to doubt that is at fault. The drive is a WD 5000KS.

If it is broken, is there a reliable 1TB drive that i should particularly go for as a replacement?

Sounds broke. Loud noises are usually fatal.
No such thing as reliable in HDs, but 7200.11s are probably the worst choice at the moment. FWIW I just bought a WD Black 1TB, had to RMA the first one which was DOA.
TBH, haven't heard anyone saying anything about Hitachi 1TB drives - which is probably a good thing as you only hear about failures mostly

from the amount of dead drives i've seen in my time, i'd never buy maxtor or seagate

samsung and wd are the fewest failures i've dealt with, so i only ever buy them

Well the RMA'd 1TB WD Black arrived this afternoon, glad to say it's working fine. For now.
