So when I built this machine last year I threw (not literally mind you) two WD SataII HD's in RAID0 in it and over the next few months had random system lockups where the whole system would do a kind of stutter alternating between half second long burts of normality with one to two second long bursts of looped sound and zero response followed by a complete lockup within about three minutes. It would usually stay in that state indefinitely until the system was hard reset and nothing was ever reported in the event viewer.
Twice during said months it did actually BSOD and the error pointed towards the Raid controller on my Gigabyte DS3 Rev1 which after a little searching is apparently renowned for being rubbish
Anyway, I dropped the array and installed the drives on the non-raid sata ports and all appeared to be well for a while, now just in the last few weeks I've been having similar issues...
System will visibly lockup but sound (usually winamp) will continue to play for anything up to a minute before locking hard and requiring a reset. Again no events were logged until the night before last which logged this:
I have changed the cables twice, changed the ports too. The only thing left that I can think of is either a motherboard issue or that the drive itself has an intermittant fault. It's annoying because it happens so rarely and even rarer will actually leave any clue as to what caused the issue.
What it does generally do is to exhibit the fault a few times over a couple of days and then be just fine for weeks.
Now, Sata drives are effectively just ATA/IDE drives with a sata interface and that means that the disk controller is indeed still on the drive itself? or am I somewhat out of date on that?
I've run WD diagnostics on the drive several times and it always comes back clear too.
Any opinions?
