Right I've got hold of a 320gb WD AAKS HD from a friend, he says it has a knackered version of Vista Ultimate on it, I've no idea how it came to be knackered.. but anyway, I've finally got the HDD to be found as a slave after having a few problems with getting it found in Windows. But now I only have the option to format the drive, and to format it to 128gb :/

Is the Vista install locked on it or something? is there a way to just format it it cleanly in DOS? any help much appreciated!

any jumpers on the back?

else have it as the only drive in, run a xp or vista installation cd and format using ntfs?

No jumpers in the back of the drive, it says not to use any unless you want some mode I cant remember what it was called lol. I've tried using it as a single drive an going through a format/install process but XP install gives some error and the Vista install doesn't even see the hard disk.

Managed another format through the XP installer, but now when I run the SATA along side the IDE drive I get NTLDR error spammed. Getting the drive to boot isn't really a concern at the minute though I just want the missing space back. :(
I'm so utterly confused by it. Can anyone suggest running some sort of boot disc with a stand alone format feature? does Partition Magic cater for that?

have you tried going into disk management

start -> run -> compmgmt.msc

try and see if its there and just delete any partitions so you just get one large space, then try to format it from there, or run vista setup and you should be able to do that stuff with in that.

that is ofcourse if your not looking to retrieve the knackered os? and or data?

I don't want any of the data on the disc, just the space really so I can use it as a slave drive, and I'm currently using XP as my main OS.
The slave drive is currently reading at 128gb, it formatted normally within Windows while slaved and can be used with no problems, but still only at 128gb. :(

What version of windows xp are you using?

My brother had the same problem a while back. He had a 200GB hard drive but XP only recognised 100~GB. He had to use a "big drive enabler" patch.

Thanks for your input, In disk management it sees the HDD as 298GB, but its listed as 128GB lol :/
