I'm putting together some parts for my first rig and am finding the HD a tricky customer, as I'm running a very tight budget.

I already have an external HD of 300GB spare that I could use as a temporary solution (until prices come down, in a few months?). This is an SSD connected via USB. I guess installing the OS on this is a feeble notion though, the rig will just run very slow right?

In the short term I don't need lots of capacity. My friend suggested just getting a 250gig (as opposed to my original 1TB), but from what I've seen the price difference is little and still very high anyways.

Anyone got any ideas or products to recommend? I think it likely I will just end up buying a well performing 250gig in a few weeks as I'll just want to get the thing up and running proper.

Any advice for a noobertron gratefully received

Get an SSD and go on a data diet for a few months :)

AFAIK Windows still does not play ball with removable storage as a boot medium. There are Linux installs that will though if you can live without Windows (and most games), you may even like it

Rip the external drive out of its case and fit it internally. Or buy a used drive off ebay, you should be able to grab a 1tb drive at a reasonable price.

I'm actually just learning some Linux at my work, so I might consider it..... as I'm using it for gaming though it's probably unlikely...
hadn't thought of 'data dieting' :D, might give it a try

with the OS + gaming + maybe dual booting a Linux install as well I would bite the bullet for now and go with one of these

It's a nippy little mechanical... bit steep but .......

Enough room for everything to tide you over and get some bigger data storage drives end of next Spring

You'll get the yadda, yadda about "get the 1Tb one" but unless your a massive downloader or "ripper" you'll take some time to even fill this amount of space. Headless chicken buying of any 1/2/3TB drives is just ridicoulous at the moment. You would think that rationing was in place and a nightly blitz by the Hun bombers was underway!....lol

Maintain your present external HDD for back up

:)

my opinion only :)

Cheers. I haven't got such a tight budget now cos this morning a tax rebate notice was sent to me. They're sending me a check for it soon supposedly, bloody treat me :)
I wont be a headless consumer though, I'll spend just a little more on the rig, then save some, and the rest I'll ***** on celebrating over Nys.
Going to buy a used 250/320 gb HD for a good price methinks
