Hey all

so after fitting my new build i though i should investigate ssd's (why i didnt before i dont know lol) and now i want to get one

if i have my os on a ssd and maybe a few frequently used programs would i experience much off a performance boost?

also is there a way to move windows 8 from one hd to a ssd with out losing anything is it really as simple as drag and drop?

and anyone one know what a normal 6gb/s hd would write at?

You should see a good increase on performance, especially when windows starts. I wont go back to a normal mechanical drive for Windows.

You will need to use a image program to move windows from one drive to another, but you ideally will need to enable AHCI in the BIOS.


A normal Mechanical drive, if a decent one you might be looking 130 mb/s roughly - but its going to be hard to say.
 
For the SSD, But you need to do a registry mod in Windows before enabling this in the BIOS.
 
ahhhh fair enough so if i wanted to change my hd to a ssd a full re install would be the best option?

also you can run a ssd beside a hd would i be correct in saying this?
 
I would do a fresh install, and yes you can run a mechanical drive bedsides a SSD but I would remove this when doing the fresh install.

I have the a SSD with the operating system on and most used programs and i have 2 mechanical drives for My Documents and other prog's.
 
I have literally just done it and my speeds are 100% better on SataII. On SataIII soon when my motherboard arrives it will be better still.

Now this is a 100% improvement on RAID0 (2 stripped) SATA HD's writing both at the same time.

My Samsung 256GB is my OS drive, my 2 SATA HD's are my 3 TB of storage.

Best £160 spent in terms of performance.

BTW I left my BIOS as RAID and SSD was recognised and installed Windows 7 64Bit straight onto that with defaults.
 
hummm why did i waste my money on a 1tb hd again lol should have got a ssd! im going to do some more investigating?

anyone know if i delete windows from my hd and just do a clean install on my ssd if there would be and problems like product keys and such?
 
sata3 hdd's are only very slightly quicker than a sata2 hdd,this is in no way down to the faster sata ports its just the drive itself thats faster

nothing compares to an ssd for raw speed
 
you can have both if you buy a smallish ssd,and use the hdd for storage,caching is an idea also if you have a z68/z77 motherboard but only 60gb of ssd space can be used to cache a hdd

LOL always the case.

I said enough when I got the I7 990 and O/C it to 4.67Ghz with 24GB ram and 460 gtx card as a number crunching machine.

Now added a SSD, another 460 in SLI and a new motherboard for SATA III.

Will it stop ? Even thinking about redoing my custom waterloop ;)

Remove HDD, fresh install onto SSD (set BIOS to AHCI first), reconnect HDD (no reg mod needed). This assumes you have a retail DVD and key. Some programs will work from the HDD (make new shortcuts), some won't. Reinstall frequently used apps/games to the SSD to see the benefits (space permitting). Leave OS on the HDD in case you need to remove SSD, it should default to booting off SSD (if not check BIOS boot order).

If you have an OEM copy of Windows (probably with a recovery partition on HDD) you will need to clone the HDD to the SSD and do a few tweaks (AHCI reg mod, disable defrag etc). Might need to reactivate Windows too.

Always do a fresh install if you can (Windows does most of the SSD optimisations for you).
 
cloning the old hdd to the new hdd would be the fastest,then format old drive and use as a spare or whatever
 
you can use software,it has to make it bootable ect,it will be perfect copy of original

macrium reflect will clone it,plus its free
