A friend of the family has asked me to have a look at their HDD. I put into my machine, power up my PC and the HDD doesn't spin?

Is this dead?

I wanted to confirm to see if there is anything else I could try.

Cheers

If the drive is receiving power it should spin up regardless of whether there is a data connection or not so a lack of activity is a bit worrying.

What sort of symptoms caused them to ask you to look at the drive?

Well its a friend of the families brothers HDD. Asked me to take a look as he has over 500 pictures on there on family and kids etc.

I thought it would be a usual, a corupt version of Windows and that I could access it using my PC. Powered up my PC to find no movement in the HDD what-so-ever.

First - does the BIOS spot it?

Second - download the manufacturer's diagnostic disk and test with that. Will give a very decent report on what is really going on.

If you say that there is no movement from the drive at all... have you also checked that the controller board hasn't come loose? Can you "feel" any vibration at all from this drive?

Also, how did they transport this disk to you? I saw a "friend" moving house the other day. And recoiled in horror when I saw that he had just slung five external hard drives into a plastic bag... leaving them all clanking together!!! OUch....
