Hi,

Last night I was working again in an application and the pc was really slow and horrible which is usual as my pc / pc's are always really quick....Anyway I thought as I had been connected to the net for several days I would reboot....
So after rebooting my system hung at the XP screen and then went into auto chkdisk......stating some sectors were unreadable....So I start to think my hdd is dieing....

Tried various ways to revive it but failed, eventually loaded up Bart PE which enabled me to back up loads of stuff etc

I tried to format the drive and re install windows but when formatting as NTFS system it stopped at 7% there is a funny sound also i.e. I can hear the drive searching - clicking away followed by a high pitch sound...hmmm? any ideas what its doing?

Anyway I need a replacement about 160g minimum and 250 - 300g maximum...However I dont know if I should go for a SATA drive or just a standard IDE? Is there much difference? Performance and seeking wise?

I need reliablity and low noise......I detest maxtors

Please can you help me decide on what HDD to go for?

Thanks in advance....

Cheers!!

If you want a quiet drive get a Samsung.
I would also get a SATA drive, generally they are a bit faster and if you have a newer mobo it offers some extra functions like SATAII and NCQ (although I don't know if the Samsung drives have that)

i thought sata spins at 7200rpm same as IDE drives????

I was thinking of going for the samsung spin point 300g?? what dya reckon?

Or do you think I should go seagate barracude instead?

Mechanically, SATA and ATA drives are the same, it's just the interface that's different. The SATA interface does allow slightly faster data transfers but it's not much in real terms.
Seagates are good all-rounders, Hitachi try for top performance (and usually make it), and Samsung go for quiet operation. WD are good too.
So it's tough making a recommendation, a lot of advice will be personal bias - if your last drive that failed was a Maxtor you're not about to recommend that particular make are you?

I got 8 Seagate ATA drives in this machine - it did have a 75G Raptor as boot drive until it died recently. In another machine next to it there's a right mixture - a 250 Spinpoint, a Hitachi 250, an IBM 120, and I have a couple of Maxtors in another one (next room - hate to risk the flying shrapnel...)
Point is - they're all great until they break.

Hitachi, Samsung, WD and Seagate.

All good quality HDDs and reliable. Samsungs are the quietest. Seagate offers 5-Year warranties on all their drives, WD are good all-rounders, and Hitachi are great performance.

My personal favourites are Hitachi and Seagate :)

Iv had 2 Diamond max 10's 300gb SATA beasts working fine for nearly a year now - dont know why soo many people hate them :).

I agree with the idea, all companies are good, until you draw a short straw.

And similarly, iv got some WD's and seagates also (no samsungs and hitachis mind - but wouldnt mind getting either of them).

So logically, the best choice could be seagate due their warranty or WD :).
