HDD just disappeared..

ok, yes it IS visible in the BIOS.

so that tells me it's visible in BIOS and not in WIN and I should therefore try some kind of DOS-based recovery option.

going to try parted magic.

having trouble getting my USB key to boot with syslinux so i can use pmagic. any tips on how to do this? followed the documentation but booting up and selecting the USB drive doesn't boot into syslinux, it goes into windows instead.

question:

does anyone know if the external SATA port (eSATA i think it's called?) on a chassis case can be used to plug in a regular SATA HDD like this? does the HDD still require a SATA power cable to run?

i'm thinking about plugging it in exernally to this eSATA port and trying that out.

The eSATA port will be the same as the internal ones and you need an enclosure.
