i ve got 2 Hdd in my system,a samsung 500gb f3 and a Hitachi 300gb.
the samsung is the main drive with everything on it and i am using the hitachi for backups created by windows,is this the best use for my hard drives, im not very clued up in this area

The Samsung is the best disk to use as your system drive.

If the Hitachi is for backups it shouldn't be in your system.

There's no point in having a backup if something disastrous happens to your system and both drives are taken out or lost.

so would it be best just to have the one drive and put the backups on that or notbother with backups and save everything to discs say once a month?

By discs do you mean DVD's?

You're better off using the Samsung in the system and use the Hitatchi as an external drive to put your backups on using a rack or enclosure.

ok,not heard of that before , will look into it thanks,so the hitachi is in the system even though i store everything that i run and the os on my samsung?

You need to think about what your backup is meant to protect against and whether it does that. For example, in your case, copying your data to another drive installed in the same system will give some protection against your first hard drive failing, and perhaps user error of deleting a file or files by mistake, but not much help if the whole system is stolen or destroyed by fire or flood. Removing the second drive from the system and perhaps putting it into an external case would allow you to connect it up to do your backup, then disconnect it and store it somewhere away from your PC.
