Just thought this would be of interest. According to a certain competitor's facebook page "You wont see those prices ever again according to the manufacturers. Stocks predicted to be in free flow by August/Sept 2011 but demand is still short of approx 60 million+ drives worldwide. You seriously will not see the old prices for a long time to come."

I think we can assume that by 2011 they meant 2012.

OCUK staff had suggested this last year in the big thread. Seemed to send some people into hysterics claiming that its impossible for prices not to eventually come back down.

What I think is meant be "you'll never see those prices again" is for current models. There will of course be future 2GB/3GB (and bigger etc) drives for less than £50/£90, but they will be from a future manufacturing technique, platter density reduction etc.

Oh, that makes sense(as you can see I'm a new member). Shame they won't come down sooner - I don't think I can wait until August or September. My current hard drive is only 1TB and keeps needing to be reorganised to make room for more files. I'll probably end up getting a 2TB drive sometime in the near future when funds free up.

PS: I take it you mean TB not GB.

Could be worth buying storage space online if you have a fast enough connection to upload and download.

Strange that well known rain forest sent me an email and most of the drives are down massively on price.

WD My Passport Essential SE 1 TB Metallic Blue Portable Hard Drive (USB 3.0/2.0)
Buy new: £178.99 now £118.79

Samsung S2 USB 2.0 1TB Ultraslim Portable Hard Drive - Black
Buy new: £151.99 now £94.79

The list goes on and one some of the bigger drives are £100 less…..Plus I have a mate in a well know company stock and getting stock is not a problem in fact they stopped buying as sales were down.

These prices are still not down to what they were before which is the whole gist of the OP's post.;)

The above drives were at least £30-40 cheaper 5 or 6 months ago ...

we had 1tb for £30 2tb for £55/60 and 3tb for £110 is the cheapest i saw i think.

as has been said the 1 and 2tb ones might not be that cheap again and maybe come down to £40 and £65/70 respectivly (just a guess) but the 3tb ones might come down lower as the higest capacity normally has a premium on it. and when the higher capacity platters come out we may see lower £/tb rather than lower overall price (i.e 3tb may never be £60 for the next generation of platter)

That's commercialism for you, they're using this as an excuse to permanently rise prices. Fairly predictable really. Must... have... more...

What people were saying was that we are the last people to benefit from supply returning to normal as all OEMs etc take what they need and then we enthusiasts get the rest. Even if supply returns to normal, the 'rest' might take a while to get back to pre-flood levels?

I doubt prices will ever return to pre-flood levels, even some time after supply has. This is just such a great opportunity for them to increase profit levels I doubt that they'll be able to leave it alone. Then you have the threat of SSD's. As they become more common the demand for HDD's will slowly tail off, which will mean more price rises. Oh, and we mustn't forget political turmoil caused by dwindling world resources in oil (Iraq anyone?), etc. More price rises. In fact I suspect the only thing that probably wont keep pace with this is people's disposable income.

Overly cynical, you say? Well, we'll see wont we. If the world's pyramid scheme economy (infinite growth model meets finite resources) hasn't collapsed in a couple of years time, then I bet HHD prices will still be far above anything inflation can account for.

But on the plus side its possible we may be turning to a completely new type of storage by then. Holo storage maybe? Or perhaps we'll be so cloud / grid focused that consumer level client side storage will be phasing out altogether. Businesses want your data online, they want to control it, so that they can charge you for the privilege of accessing it. At this point I'm in danger of rambling off into conspiracy theory, so I'll just get my coat...

Drive prices are dropping, where i work a 1Tb and 2TB has a difference of £7 and are both under a ton, they where well past that before!

500's are around £63, thats only £33 up so they are slowly going to drop!

Just got to allow time

I haven't been keeping up with current affairs. Or rather I didn't need to upgrade/purchase any storage so didn't pay attention to prices until recently. I thought I was going mad when I saw what the prices are now.

I've just checked and cost prices have and are dropping which means should the shop you go to is being nice, fair, honest, prime and proper (and there very few of them) then you will get a bargin with margins of around 9-12% profit on the drive which is nothing really!
