I have a friend who is not really into computers, but a few months ago bought an external USB2.0 HDD (dont know the make/model) and recently it's started clicking and not working properly. Not being a techie he has no clue what to do, and nor do I so I thought I'd ask you guys.

He's also been looking into getting the data restored by a professional company but at £120 he's not really keen on the idea. On that front, if its needed, does anybody know any good companies for retrieivng data from it?

Cheers.

If the drive can still be read then try using a porgram called recover my files. I used it when I had a drive go down and managed to recover almost everything on the unit. There is a small fee for it but I certainly would advise trying it if the drive can be read.

Google tbh. Everywhere you look will be expensive though.

You can recover the data yourself sometimes, but that usually involves buying the EXACT SAME HDD down to the revision number and swapping over the PCB board - assuming its not a complete mechanical failure.

It all depends on the fact if you can see the drive or not, if you cannot see the drive/data a professional company is the way to go.

One week ago I recovered the data for a friend with a program calle GFetDataBack after he formatted the drive by mistake but it wasn't free, the program was $79

£120 is dirt cheap for this service! I'd just take the internal drive out of its enclosure and try connected by ide ribbon. However if the data is that valuable, he should cough up the 120 quid.
